Dual tanks

Tried to run my truck with out the rear tank in and poured gas all over drive way from the disconnected gas lines. What I am trying to understand is why does gas flow thru the rear tank lines when the truck is running off the frount tank. Can anyone shed some light on this.

Because that's the beauty of having dual tanks on fords, it's a pretty common problem.. What year is your truck, there was a recall on some years.

This happened on a truck I worked on once. It was a few years ago now but from what I recall, there was a mix up in the return lines going through the tank switch to the tanks resulting in one draining quickly and the other overflowing. I remember just swapping the return lines at the switch.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Maybe off topic but does anyone notice less MGP on the back tank compared to the front. I know there is a gallon diff. I think but its a diff. of 50 miles
