Pwr Str Gearbox Input shaft seal leaking - easy fix?

My 1987 F350 has an input shaft seal leak on the power steering gearbox. I am considering trying to replace this seal without removing or dismantling the gearbox. I'm hoping it might be possible to pull the old seal by punching a little hole in its metal flange and yanking it out with a small slide hammer. Has anyone tried this, will this work, any precautions or any suggestions?

Thanks.

I had it done by a mechanic. He said it was a PITA and he needed a special puller. It was only a hundred bucks or so, so I didn't ask any other details.

If you try drilling a hole maybe...the seal is extremely hard. The chance for error ie scoring of the housing or sector shaft are high. You would then have the problem of sliding the seal over the sector shaft threading without damaging the seal. I did the job and posted my 2bits here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/80_96/3551.html . Good Luck.

Hi Spectrum If you are going to change the input seal(top one) its easy. Diconnect the steering shaft at the steering box and push the shaft up. The seal should pop out easily if you drill a small hole a pry it out.
