thinning paint

Hey everyone, I am new to painting with a spray gun and i was wondering how to mix the paints when it says mix 5%...or whaterver the label say of thinner. Do i simply just mix 5% of the quart that i am painting with or what? Sometimes i even see mix 100% thinner, so would i put the same amount of thinner in that there is paint?
_%__ =___X___
100% (quart/gallon) Do i have the right idea?

Inputs are greatly aprecciated.

Thanks

Yes, It is percentage as you describe 5% seems low. Sometimes up to 150%.
