286 Merc,

Kinney would say any of the Fullsize Ford or Mercury clips I mentioned above. As far as the F350 he would say get a 3/4 to Ton truck frame, later model of course, and use it especially if you are towing. I will call and ask him on the 42-47 model and get back with you. Donald.

Lobo, I dont have dimensions handy but I was told by Industrial Chassis that the Dakota crossmember is too wide for the 42-7.

And the 40-1 is even narrower??

Have a question for you also. What is the availability/price of the 1933-4 Brazilian Ford 21" V8 wire wheels?

Donald, why wouldn't a big boat Lincoln work under a 350? The beast weighed over 5000 lbs and had a towing capacity of 5K or more.

Maybe George has weight and towing specs from that era as I havent researched the differences between years and brands as far as component sizes such as ball joints, spindles, etc.

Get rid of the living room couch ride with stiffer springs and a big sway bar.

Carl,

A Lincoln clip would work. When I said Ford or Mercury I also meant to include Lincoln. My 53' F100 as a matter of act had a 69 Mark II front clip and it work real good. When you get into the 80's model of Ford, Mercury, Lincoln cars the front clips all interchange. I won't get a chance to talk to Kinney until the Weekend. If this thread close before then I will post the answer later under "Carl's reply". Donald

Thanks Carl.

Carl, I haven’t seen those wheels for sale in years…
Most of those wire wheels disappeared over the years, but I will ask about it to a friend of mine tonight… He knows for sure if those wheels are easy to find or not, and their price.
I know the wire wheels for the 29s are close to impossible to find.
Do you prefer for me to post here whatever I find out or send it to you by email?

Best regards,
Lobo

When I set up my truck the first time, I used a mid '70's
Ranchero.

Pro's
All Ford.
Remounted engine on existing mounts
Power disc brakes

Con's
Torching the frame in half and having to try to equalize so many measurements and levels to get it right.
Headlights ended up 22.5" high at the center. State law says 24" minimum.
Dragging every parking lot you pull into.

Gang,

Has anyone thought anymore about a photo gallery of clips before and after the sheetmetal is put back on? When I say clips I am including stock straight axles, M2's, Dakotas, Chrysler torsion bars, GM, Pacer, and FORD suspensions. I think it would be useful to someone debating a change or starting a build. If anyone does take off and run with this let me know I can supply Ford Clip pictures. If anyone has has not seen the 56' BW in the latest issue of ROdder's Journal that is a flawlessly done truck and not just because it has Ford clip. The attention to detail with regards to fit anon the metal work is one of a kind.

We definitely plan to do the picture thing. We tried to draft 4Speed to collect them. Not sure if he caught the thread though. I'll get a hold of him. Anyway, somebody will get them together. The 5 of us heavily involved with the summary refinement just don't have time at the moment. keep your PICs handy because we definitely want to include the them.

While I got your ear, can you get the measurement from the bottom of your frame to the spindle center. This is the most accurate way to compare all the different suspensions. Not too many of the Big Ford clippers around here. Really need your help so we can include this data for all the Ford clip.

Anything else you would like to add for the Ford rewrite. Nows the time to do it.

Thanks

As you may have learned from reading other threads in this forum, we intend to refine our suspension article. The next product will be an FTE tech article. Perhaps we will even pursue a magazine article at some point. This is basically "Last Call" for the Big Ford clip IFS thread. Please read the summary in the stickied suspension article. Here is what we are looking for if it hasn't been addressed yet.

1. How to install in 100 words (or so)
2. Specific info on ride height, actual measurement from bottom of the frame to the spindle center (easy to measure from the backside.
3. Refining any vague, misleading, or missing information
4. Here's where you take issue with anything in the write-up yu believe is false, (or forever hold your peace)
5. Anything else you think is significant. This is the time.

Fatfenders,

The distance from the bottom of the frame to spindle center appears to be about 1.5" to 2" as best as I can measure. Let me know if there anything else I can provide.

We could use a very brief description of the install process. Nothing real specific. 100-150 words. If you would like, we can email you the Camaro instructions summary for your review so you can see what we have in mind. I am sure the GM shares some similarity in the basic procedure but I hate to assume that since the summary writers have no first hand install experience for the Big Ford clip.

Hey everybody,

Has anyone seen the 56' BW on page 140 that is featured in the January 2004 issue of Street Truck Magazine? It has a 75' Torino Front clip. That would be the rear steer version I mentioned earlier in the post. Doesn't the truck look cool with the stance that it has?
