MPG with a 460
Hi there.
Does anyone out there know if a claim of 14 mpg with a 95 460 f-250 could be true? I am looking at two 95-96 F-250 with 460 that both claim to be getting 14 mpg and I am sceptical. Also are there any differences between 92-460's and 95-96 460's. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Dex.

There are a lot differences in F250 trucks- Regular cab, supercab, Crew Cab. 2WD 4WD. Manual vs automatic. 3.55 gears or 4.10 gears. Light Duty vs Heavy Duty. XL, XLT, Lariat, Eddie Bauer trim packages. Optional wheels and tires. All of these will vary the weight and or amount of drag on the drivetrain thus changing the gas mileage. And as always, YMMV, Your Mileage May Vary.
I drive a 94 F250 4x4 XLT Supercab with 4.10 gears, Automatic, longbed with a heavy shell. IMHO this is the second to worst combo for mileage, CrewCab being worse.
I get 11 to 12 MPG almost no matter how I drive. I don't recall ever seeing 13mpg and on a really bad day I have seen 10mpg. Based on this I would think it is reasonable you might see an F250 that gets 14mpg regularly. I have heard of some that get 8-9 regularly. I would expect a regular cab, shortbed, 3.55 or low# gear, manual, XL trim package, stock skinny tires would have the best shot at 14mpg.
What I learned to ignore, after my first fillup was what a used truck dealer will tell you. I was told by a straight faced dealer that "Oh yeah, this 460 will just cruise along and should easily get you 18mpg". Oh I wish. It cruises along but I think I would get 18mpg only if I was goind down hill from Pike's Peak. With gas possibly hitting $3/g this summer, the old tugboat ain't gonna see a lot of miles.
Just my opinion and like I said, YMMV.

As to the differences between a 1992 and a 1995 460, the heads are different, the 92's use the E8TE head and the 94 and newer use the F3TE head the difference better port velocities and angles in the latter but the earlier is better for porting. As to mileage i have a 1996/97 F-250 now a F-350 4.10 Extended cab SB 139in WB 460 5 speed w/ 285/75 R16 BFG AT's, headers, cam, porting, valves, Air filter and a few other mods. I got a best between Bend Oregon and Shasta Ca at 61 mph average of 14.42. all other times i get a consistant 12.3-13 Highway empty and 9-10 town, loaded i get 9.5-10 mpg (sometimes 8, but thats on White bird pass) and thats with a 11000# goose neck.
Now remember no two trucks are the same even when built side by side, just thought i might give you those bits and pieces.
Best of luck

Finally, a question that I can answer. I own a 1993 F-250 Supercab 4x4 with a 5-spd. manual and a 460. I has a 4.10 rearend and even with cruise control and flat southern Californian freeways the best it has done is 13 mpg. Around town it is usually 9 to 10 mpg. I knew all of that and bought it anyway. It is a great motor in a great truck.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread...
What sort of fuel economy does a 460 get meandering down a bumpy dirt road at 10 MPH? Assume EFI, an automatic, 2WD, and no hot-*******. Presumably, the 460 would be at idle RPM.
I'm wondering if 38 gallons is enough to go 300 miles between gas stations. I'm swapping a 460 into an older truck, and this involves a fuel tank swap. I could put in an aftermarket bigger rear tank to get 57 or more gallons of capacity.
My dual-tank Ranger 2.8 got a pitiful 11 or so MPG on the road in question.
