C-6 transmission
Hi : I have a 78 F150 4X4 351 M with a C-6. I am currently rebuilding C-6 and have a clutch question. When tearing down the clutch packs the high reverse clutch pack had 3 clutches and steels in it and the fwd clutch had 4 discs and steels in it. The rebuild kit came wit 4 and 5 discs and steels respectively. My question is can I put the 5 discs and 4 discs in the clutch packs and if so what do I do to acheive the correct clearances in the packs?

You should be able to install the same number of plates that came out. The kits come with the maximum number of plates that might be necessary. Some transmissions have more plates than others depending on the HP of the motor. Be sure to check the clearances with a feeler gauge.

Yes you can add the extra clutches with a little machining. For the direct ,as long as the drum only has a single snap ring groove for the top pressure plate, you can cut a step in the pressure plate approx .160" to allow for the extra thickness.
You can also get another step pressure plate from the forward clutch and use that in the direct as the top p/plate.
In the fwd clutch there is prob a wave washer amongst the steels.Remove that and thin the pressure plate slightly.
The fwd clutches do come in 2 sizes also,.060" +.080"..The thinner clutches make it a little easier to fit more in.
