So I have been trying to fine people that have been towing heavy loads with custom SCT Tunes. I am towing 17,000 lbs in AZ on 7% grades and would like more power. I do want to be safe but when you mention towing to these costume tuners they say not to go over a 50-60 hp tune. Banks tuning works like the EDGE. They change the data that the ECM see's. So they claim in the case of Bank's that they are safe at 170 FT LBs of Torque. I have a friend with an 06 F350 pulling an 6 horse trailer using a 6 gun and exhaust no studs. Mind you in 06 Ford put better studs in the truck stock. He can do 55 loaded up steep grades. I am not sure why I couldn't do a 150 -170 ft lb of torque in a custom tune and be safe, if I am monitoring EGT, EOT, ECT which I do now with the canned 65 hp tune that comes with the SCT.

Is there anyone out there that has been running a stronger tune for a few years safely? If so, whose tune are you running.

I do have studs, exhaust, Bullet Proof EGR Cooler and external oil cooler, Garret Power Max Stage 1, Blue spring and looking at putting in a Banks intercooler.

Anyone have a modded truck pulling a 16000 plus load with a custom tune?

I am adding a techni cooler and 4.30 gears and have already installed the Garret Power max stage 1. I have also ordered a tune from DP Tuner for towing


Still hoping for feedback from someone who is running a similar setup.

If you would update the thread with your results. We tow 16k daily and the engine is all stock...still wondering if I can tune AT ALL safely.

May be worth cross posting over on the 6.0 forum - lots of activity there.

 

While I cannot speak for all tunes/tuning companies, it would be possible on our tow tunes to tow at that capacity. Our tow tunes are designed to be used safely in weights supporting your factory towing capability.

 

I would contact 5-Star and/or DP-Tuner. I have enjoyed tow tunes from both.
