Rear end whine

Have just upgraded to a 2003 Screw 5.4, 3:55 LS. Question is ....the rear end is whining. It's been a while since I had a LS adn just don't remember any whine. How much is acceptable ? Normal ?

Should I visit the dealer?

Thanks

Steve

I'd just pull the diff cover and check it out. You might have some metal shavings loose in there. I'd check the gears to see if it was shimmed correctly as well. On each tooth of the ring gear there should be a small rectangle in the center of the tooth where contact occurs.

When you are done, refill the diff and make sure to include some LS additive.

I would take it to the dealer and get a tech to go for a drive with you and see what he thinks.

Rear end whine

Rear end whine can be caused by gear profile error on either pinion or ring or both. Rear end noise is a common warranty issue. It is doubtful that it is due to the limited slip clutch pack.

After I bought my truck I became aware of a whine in my rearend. I took it to the dealer and they had to add the LS additive. The dealership that I bought my truck from had serviced the truck and had changed all the fluids. Obviously they didn't add the additive. This fixed the whining problem in the rearend.
