New guy bringing a 95 back to life
Hey everyone ,
found this forum looking up information on a truck I just acquired, ..... I picked up a 95 f250 with the 7.3 from a friend of mine . The truck hasn't ran in about 9 months. We deal back and fourth on a lot of stuff so I got the truck for a song...
Anyways.. the story with the truck is he was the second owner, he bought it at an auction when a company went out of business (was a company vehicle). It's always ran well but developed issues with the fuel system leaking. He had a shop replace some lines, fuel pump, fuel filter (looking at old shop receipt now). It was driven for a bit longer and one day he shut it off in his driveway... went out later and it wouldn't start back up, just cranked. He didn't mess with it much and was frustrated since he just spent so much at the shop.. so he dragged it to the back 40 where it sat for 9 months and was forgotten about.
well anyways it's now in my driveway. And i am taking steps to bring it back to life. I am a power sports mechanic but diesels are Greek to me, this is my first. I have tools, mechanical ability . And common sense .. so I want to learn this truck.
... I put a set of boat battery's I had on the shelf in it just to see what happened ..
.. key on.. "wait to start " lights up then goes out after a minute or so , cranks no start, no smoke. I hit the valve on the side of the fuel
canister and pressurized diesel shot out .. so I assume the pump is doing its job. I then found this website and learned a few things .. my tach doesn't move at all when cranking. But I also learned the battery's I put in are too small ... so perhaps my cranking voltage is too low.
Well im anxious to work on it but being Sunday my local parts store is closed . Tomorrow I will be picking up some new battery's and going from there. .
Just wanted to post this on here and take in any advice I can get!!

Yes Kevin thank you!,
I guess I just wanted to get some discussion going as I try things to get insight.
Really wish I wasn't so loyal to my local parts house but they treat me well ... otherwise I'd have the truck in my shop tonight !!
I have heard mixed reviews on the tach movement while cranking. Some say it's a sure sign, others say it's not. Just not sure if i should grab a CPS while I am getting battery's or not.

Don't buy CP's from anywhere but ford or IH.

I have actually heard of places telling you the wrong CCA's for the batteries as well. My 97 recommends 850 but I have seen lower for it. I just put in Interstates in mine and it cranked way better than it did with Napa 750 CCA batteries.
Like others have said and others will continue to say, Ford or IH only for the CPS. Apparently a significant portion of people who buy the parts store ones have their fail the first or second run after putting them in.
Check all the usual stuff like battery cables and what not. I am new to Ford's and powerstrokes so I am not exactly an expert on these by any means.
If you don't have a code reader, I would get one. Being that yours is a 1995, I think you can use an OBDII on them, but I have also read you may need to have it flashed first for it to work.
I am also curious how your friend will feel if it ends up just being the CPS and you change it and it runs flawlessly.haha

Put in new battery's . I did not change the cps since it was not in stock at the dealer. Freshened up all connections and cleaned up everything. Installed new battery's and it just cranked and cranked.. no life. I phoned a friend and he told me to unplug the sensor on the drivers side head nearest the radiator. I unplugged this sensor and tried again.. this time it chugged and chugged and finally fired up and sat there and idled. Took a couple minutes to smooth out but then ran nice!. I let it run for<br />about half an hour checking everything over. I shut it off. Plugged that sensor back in and it would not start back up. Unplugged it and it fired right up... what does this sensor do?? My buddy couldn't remember the reasoning behind it ... just remembered trying.<br /><br />it does have a slight oil drop coming from somewhere that will need to be investigated.. <br /><br />it also will not rev over 2500 . It hits that point and blows white smoke and starts missing ?? <br /><br /><br />Either way! Step at a time I guess .

That sensor is the ICP. It "reads" the oil pressure to the injectors. When unplugged the PCM uses a default setting which allows the injector to fire. It sounds as if you need a new one. Does the engine run smoothly until it hits 2500 RPMs, then stumble and slowly clime in rpms? This is one sign of bad injector O-rings. The fuel filter can turn black/slimy when the O-rings are bad also.

The truck runs and sound great until 2500 then shudders misses smokes white .. struggling to climb past..
what is the importance of that sensor? I will replace but just curious as to its whole function.
How big of a job are the o-rings? .. I will open the fuel filter tomorrow and evaluate it.
