Lost, Need HELP

I'M with the "keep the murano through scool crowd". It's fiscally more responsible at this point in your life. There will always be trucks. Sure, get a good diagnosis as parts are cheaper than engines if it turns out that way, but I guarantee you your grandfather knows a thing or two about money, debt and responsibility. If you went to him and laid it out about it not being budget wise at this point in your life he will probably relate and have a have a ton more respect for you. Tell him sell it or part it out. Your day for your dream truck will come......then there will be a fiance' and......but that's another story...

Definitely watch how you store it if you decide to do that.
I think you're in a kind of a nice situation. Never owned a 6.0 myself but this forum is full of stories how they're nice if you "bullet proof" them. You have a nice truck that might just need a few engine parts or might need "bullet proofed". If it were me, I'd have your grandpa's 6.0 rebuilt and "bullet proofed" if/when the time comes....that is if you have a nice place to store it for free.

How close are you to graduating and getting a full time job? Any chance you can store it a year or two and then figure out the engine problem? If you'll have a better chance of using it after graduating then might be worth storing it. New ones are dang near cost prohibitive for youngsters and used ones are a big question mark. At least you know what you've got with this one...worst case is it needs a new engine.

Torque Pro App is $5, a bluetooth OBDII adaptor is $22. For less than $30 you can actually find out what's wrong with it first.

Does your grandfather have a garage or shop you can pull the truck into? I myself would find a place (long term) to keep it. In your spare time and when money becomes available, if it really does need a new engine, I'd just tear it down myself and slowly rebuild it. Take your spare money as it comes along, throw into a coffee can, and save for pistons, rings, gasket set, bearings, OH and probably the most important a Ford Factory repair manual. You can rent the tools you need to work on it. It's not something that has to be done in a week or two either.

Why? He can go to places like Advance auto parts, rent the tools with a deposit for free, when he returns the tools, unbroken of course, he gets his deposit put back to his debit/credit card. I myself have a wide variety of tools but every once in awhile I have to go rent some sort of a puller usually, I end up keeping the puller about a week, take it back with the receipt and the deposit is always refunded to my card. You can rent full tool sets from them for the purpose of rebuilding your engine, it's actually pretty nice.
