Autozone Surefire engine complete long block, minus oil pan, oil pick up tube and valve covers.
Cost $4000 including core. $960 core charge. They see it this way 45k+ for a new truck or 4k for an engine, easy for them to choose, beside the truck has a solid drivetrain, the whole front end was rebuilt, less than 15k, tranny thou stock is also really strong, if they get another 100k out of the truck it was money well spent. That truck engine and tranny has never been touched, they got their money out of it and then some.

That brought back a lot of memories. In a past life, I used to strip down blown up engines to the block and look at what failed on them.
The smell being emmited from the engine was horrid when I took of the valve covers and oil pan, strong burnt oil and almost smell like when you weld.

The smell of a burnt up engine is something you'll never forget. Much like the smell of bourbon street in the summer...

In lieu of the exhorbitant costs of a new and even used trucks these days, it make financial logic to spend a few $k to replace what needs repair, especially if the maintanence has been kept up on the vehicle. I can make a $100-$200 payment a month for a few than to make $500-$800+ payment for 5-7 years.

Have you finished this Project? How long did it take? Any problems with the new engine?

Literally 6hrs removal install, what took time was to actually wait for parts 3days total, for oil pick up tube, oil pan valve cover gaskets, lower intake manifold gasket, COP, oil cooler and miscelenious little parts needed for replacement. Broke in the engine maybe 2hr process to make sure everything was right. Truck was picked up on Friday so we'll see how she does in a couple of days before I do the first oil change.

Sounds like you made good time. With more EPA rules, and higher truck prices,I think we will see more of this.

Truck just hit 25K on the "new" engine and is doing great picked some more MPG's according to the driver. Just a bit concern it's using 3qts of oil every 5K oil change intervals? Just like it did with the old mill, no oily exhaust either, the pcv valve is a new Motorcraft one? What would cause this much oil consumption or is this normal for the 6.8 2v?

Using 3 quarts in 5k is not out of ordinary for some engines, V10 included. I have found consumption can depend quite a bit on how it is being driven. Short trips and a lot of idling can help suck oil. The 6 quart pan was always too small IMO.

Well glad it's not something to be concern about, but knowing the drivers I'm afraid of the same scenario happening to this mill.

Keep the oil level up. I could squeeze 6.5 quarts in mine and be at the top of the hole. What oil are you running?

FWIW, my Excursion likes to drink Mobil 1, uses almost nothing with Valvoline or Penzoil synthetics. Might try a different brand oil.

My dads 03' V10 always drank more synthetic oil than blend. Always seemed to use the more Mobil 1 between changes than other oils. On my 04' brand of synthetic doesn't seem to matter. You could try a blend 5w30 or maybe even a high mileage 5w30 and see if consumption changes. The high mileage oils are usually on the higher end of the viscosity scale for a 5w30. Could just use a blend and do 3k-4k miles OCIs.

Mine drinks a quart per 1,000 since I bought it 180,000miles ago.
No smoke and only minimal leaks/drips
