1988 F250, set base timing 10*, now idles @ 30*

1988 F250 XLT Lariet, 460, C6, 4x4, reg cab, long bed

I promise everyone, I searched this topic. I didn't see the answers I was looking for.

I've set the base timing to 10* BTDC with the spout out. Then, with the spout in and using my timing light, at idle, it shows 30* BTDC. It idles at 750 rpm and it seems a little rough, no misfire or anything, but the whole truck seems to vibrate. Also, the exhaust smells really rich.

I've checked for fault codes KOEO, only "11". I have not take it on the road yet.

So, my question is this: using my timing light how much timing advance should I be seeing while at idle, spout in, on a 1988 460?

Timing looks about right to me with SPOUT in. My old 1992 F350 w/5.8L engine reacted about the same. The timing jumped up to 25-30 and seemed to vary a fair amount at idle.

It will throw a ton of timing at idle with the spout in. No load on the motor, no problem. The computer does what it needs. I bet if you have someone put it in gear(holding the brake) it would drop the timing some.

My '89 302 had the same kinda "shaky" idle. Not dead smooth like you would think it should have with a stock truck motor.
