Well, all we got done tonight was putting the tranny onto the motor.

We want to go to PnP this weekend to see if we can find a column with an automatic selector and power steering. We will install the motor on Monday for sure though. I need to take the drive line to the drive line place to have it made to fit the new tranny.

Speaking of tranny's. Can anyone tell me what mine is? It came out of an 87 Ford truck with a 6cyl motor. Here are the numbers on it.

Thanks. To me mine looks more like the C6 in that pic.

Ok, now another question, well I may have answered it by reading a few threads about it, but want to confirm.

We want to put power steering in. If I read things right, I can use a power steering box out of a 67-79. The column has to be up to 72 only. Am I correct?

I'm not up on all details and don't want to give you any wrong specs,
"Ultraranger" is the one who has done it and can give you all the correct info.

Ok, thanks. I've done some more reading and it looks like I can use up to 79 on the column but would need to do some rewiring to make it work with my turn signals and such. I would be ok with that. Makes looking for a set up a little easier with more of a year range.

According to various sources, it should be a c6. There should be 17 pan bolts and the pan itself shaped like Utah.

1969 is when the Saginaw PS gearbox was put into service in the Bumpsides. Earlier '69 back to '67 Bumpside PS gearboxes would be the less desirable Bendix versions.

I have a '78 Saginaw PS gearbox in my '69 F100 Ranger along with a '78 tilt column. The compatible '69-'79 steering column (with a Saginaw PS gearbox) will have to be shorter than a column for manual steering or for a Bendix PS gear box.

I didn't cut/splice any of my truck's main wiring harness to install the '78 Dentside tilt column in my truck. I made a 'patch cable' to plug in between the main wiring harness of my truck and the turn signal harness of the column.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post14923738

'67-'77 Ford trucks with an automatic will have the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch) located on the top of the column (inside the truck, near the firewall). '78/'79 Ford truck columns with an automatic will have the NSS located on the left side of the transmission.

Find a 2wd dentside with power steering and disc brakes. I used a 74. Use the neutral safety and reverse switch on the tranny, not the new column. The challenge will be to find a column that the shifter is not worn out and loose although parts are available. Get the rod that goes to the tranny and the kickdown rod too.

Thanks for all the tips. We go to PnP tomorrow to see what we can find.

In the mean time, I got some more done today. Polished the hood. It's hard to see the difference on this one. It was pretty bad to begin with.

Also did the passenger side door and fender. No before pic. LOL This is after,

After that I started working on the wiring mess. This green wire was connected to the back of the fuse box.

Here is the rest of the green wire. The connector has seen it's better days.

I'm not sure what this wire is for? It is connected (looks like a factory connector at the good end) to the plug that has the one orange and white coming out the middle.

I believe it is 297B in this next pic.

Here is the other end of the green wire someone hacked in.

Size: 2.53 MB

They had the green wire wrapped around that bare wire behind the fuse box.

Luckily we still have the donor truck so we went and pulled the loom out of it, and I went to work tracing wires and getting what I needed out of it.

I got that all taken care of and put everything back together. I will be checking the wiring under the truck before to long, to look for any bare spots.

Ok, another question. Where is the light supposed to go? It isn't long enough to reach the glove box and it doesn't look like it would go in the instrument panel.

Doesn't that light go on the lighter housing? So you can see where to put the lighter back when it's dark.

I think your right, and was going to post that but have not driven my truck in over 20+ yrs at night, plus stopped smoking back in 1988 so could not be sure but sound about right.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will check it out and let you know.

Today we were able to get the motor in.

Got the driveline measured for where it needs to be shrunk to.

Size: 2.40 MB

Then took advantage of PnP's half off sale and got a tranny oil cooler.

Size: 3.54 MB

Hubby did some modifying and got that installed and then we put in the radiator and fan.

Tomorrow I'm going to go buy some new plugs and other tune up stuff. Then I can install all that on the motor. Hopefully we will be able to start it tomorrow night. Got my fingers crossed anyway.

Then hubby has to figure out a way for me to shift it. LOL We were unsuccessful on finding a column. I did find an aftermarket one for 900 bills. but that is a bit to much for me. Will have to improvise for now.

It's question time again. Does anyone one know where these wires go? The orange one is pretty short, and the blue one comes out of the same hole as the temp/oil/coil wire.

I found the remnants of a wire, but I think it goes down under the truck and goes to the light in the back of the camper. I will need to verify that before to long.

Oh, and another thing I need to find asap, is a heater control valve. Mine is not there and the hoses are hooked up so it is always on. I'm going to just make a big loop in the one line so it doesn't go to the heater core for now. If I don't find the valve by the time it starts to get cold, I'll just undo the loop and retook it up right.
