1972? F250 4x4 electrical issues

Hi Guys,

My title and door tag says I have a 1972 2wd f250. The transfer case / front driveline / front axle would disagree with that. I think this was a 1972 2wd cab / bed put on a 4x4 chassis.

Here is my question. I have a dash mounted emergency flasher switch and one on the column. My turn signals do not work. Dash switch works with key on or off, column switch only with key on. I suspect the column is from a diff year truck than the body. I'm planning to replace the turn signal switch setup as the switch does absolutely nothing. I tested with a meter, no changes when the switch is put in any position.

I also have only one flasher unit under the dash, and do not see a location for a second one.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Ryan Minihan

Sorry, got ahead of my typing on that one. Does anyone know which years the f250 had an in dash hazard switch vs on the column?

As far as I know, the bump sides (67-72) had dash mounted switches, and dent sides (73-79) started using column mounted switches somewhere in their production.

That column is from a 73-79. To check the frame vin, look at the top of the frame rail under the passenger door. It should start with F26 for 4wd. Are the front leaf spring hangers connected to a front crossmember? If so, that could signify a 67-77 frame. Without a front crossmember signifies a 77.5-79 frame. Does the cab and bed have a large gap? That signifies a 73-79 frame due to a 2" increase in wheelbase. Is the transfer case divorced or married?

Outstanding info! Thanks. Yes, large gap between bed and cab. Transfer case is divorced. Front leafs are connected to a crossover at the front.

Very nice! Thank you. So the turn signal flasher looks like it is in the back of the gauge cluster. I'll look for it.

I used to have a 1968 F250, the switch was there. This post jogged some old memories.

The hazard flasher hangs behind the dash and the blinker flasher is mounted on the fuse block.

I have a hang down type connected to a blue and an orange wire. When I pull the dash hazard switch, the hazards come on, and that is what is making the blinking noise. I see nowhere on my fuse box to put a flasher. It only has spots for 5 fuses if that helps.

I have a wiring harness in the garage that I will take some pictures of tomorrow and post. Nice ride by the way. One plus is your truck has the 205 transfer case. Does it have drum or disc on the front? Open or closed knuckle?

Thanks! Drum up front, but powered at least. Looks to be closed knuckle, solid axle tube to the joint. I can't see any ujoints.
