I have a 2011 connect that has lost 3rd gear. Drives fine in first and second then when it shifts into 3rd gear it's like it goes to neutral. Fluid levels are good and everything else that I can see seems fine, just no 3rd gear. Any thoughts on what the problem might be before I take it in would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not the barer of bad news, but According to "other" forum statistics as well as several lemon law sites.. it would appear that many of the older TC's transmissions are doomed from the begin, depending on how many miles are already on the van..

I was hoping it's a servo or something like that rather then a total rebuild. It has 120,000. miles on it though, so I guess i'll find out next week. I was also hoping for a little more input from people here but I guess not. Thanks for responding Toaster!

If you are not in a hurry, I'd wait a bit. There are several people on this site who know their stuff and occasionally drop in to help with problems. I've had a great deal of support here but I've sometimes had to wait a bit.

Also, there are a number of sites in England that are devoted to the Transit Connect--you might find some answers there.

Good luck with your problem, I hope it turns out to be something easy.

Evan,
I wish I could wait but it's one of my company service vehicles and I need it back in service. I bought this as a test vehicle and it hasn't really worked out anyways so I'm thinking of dumping it and buying another full size van like the rest I have. I am hoping it isn't something major so I don't have to dump a bunch of money into it just so I can sell it. Thanks for the input though.

Before you sign off and head for the hills, if you have a minute, I am interested in your TC experience. I am not putting many miles on my TC and like to talk with others who have more mileage, particularly people who use the vehicle for work. Did you put the 120,000 miles on the vehicle? What kinds of problems have you had and at what mileage?

Heading for the hills? Sorry I wasn't signed on when you responded but I am trying to be as timely as possible. To answer your questions no I didn't put all 120,000 miles on it only about the last 65,000 or so. As for problems and exact miles when it happened I will have to ask my shop manager he handles all the repair problems for our vehicles. I know we have had the wheel bearings replaced (and may need them again I'm told) brakes a couple of times and a bunch of little things it seems like. Lost keys, even though that's not the cars fault, is one thing that drove me nuts since they aren't cheep and a pain in the *** to replace. I am not always in the loop when it comes to a lot of the repairs only when the large PO's come across my desk do I get involved. Like I said we were trying this one out in hopes of using smaller vehicles in an attempt to save some money, so I'm probably not going to be the one with the answers you are looking for but I'll ask my guys what else has been done.

Thanks for responding to my questions. I can see where it would be frustrating to run a business and have to deal with on-going transportation issues.

As you probably know, there are two other small vans on the U.S. market, a dodge and a chevy. I looked at them, but they were not my cup of tea. I have no idea about their incidence of repair but they might be worth looking at as economical work horses.

In my experience, all vehicles have some problems. Do you have some kind of formulae for when a vehicle exceeds your tolerance for problems?

The Chevy is really just a few hundred dollar more expensive Nissan. The Ford is the nicest (though not cheapest) small van available.

For commercial use especially it often does work out well to figure a 100k life cycle, and prepay repair maintenance cost upfront. Yes, I make money selling such products, but it greatly reduces downtime, so you make more money too. Most companies make more profit in the first week they own a truck I sell, than what I make selling em. Then at 100k trade em in while they still have a little value.

You are a person of few words. Could you (or someone) tell me about Technical Service Bulletin # 14-0002?

4F27E TRANSMISSION - SYMPTOMS OF DIRECT CLUTCH FAILURE - 2-3 OR 2-4 UPSHIFT FLARE – LACK OF 3RD AND/OR 4TH GEAR –- DTCS P0733, P0734, P0751 AND/OR P0972

Publication Date: January 6, 2014

FORD: 2008-2011 Focus

FORD: 2010-2013 Transit Connect

This article supersedes TSB 12-6-15 to update the vehicle model years, model lines, Service Procedure and Part List.

ISSUE:
Some 2010-2013 Transit Connect and 2008-2011 Focus vehicles equipped with a 4F27E transmission may exhibit a 2-3 or 2-4 upshift flare, or lack of 3rd and/or 4th gear along with burnt automatic transmission fluid and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0733, P0734, P0751 and/or P0972. A direct clutch repair kit is now available to address these concerns.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Remove and overhaul the automatic transmission using the direct clutch repair kit and seal kit. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01. a.The direct clutch repair kit and seal kit include all parts that must be replaced during this repair.
b.Inspect the servo rod bore in the transmission case. A worn servo rod bore can also cause pressure loss in the direct clutch hydraulic circuit. If the servo rod bore in the transmission case is worn, it can be repaired by installing a bushing using the 4F27 Servo Bore Master Repair Kit available from the Rotunda Technician Tool Program (RTTP), kit number NRL4F27.

2.NOTE PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
For 2010-2012 Transit Connect vehicles built on or before 02/10/2012 - Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) release 77.01 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at Motorcraft.

Thank you very much. I have a 2015 TC so it looks like I might not have the noted problem (but I'm sure I have other problems to look forward to).

Also, out of curiosity and to keep up to date, what would the cost be for the parts and labor of such a transmission repair?

And so, I looked up reviews for the TC and found that the transmission was iffy in its early U.S. form. My guess is that every vehicle has its Achilles heel. I haven't found mine yet, but I only have a few thousand miles on the van. Loving what I have, so far.
