AE question, and missing truck

My kid started my new to me 97 friday. He was going to start moving some of my stuff to my shop (where I'm moving to). I'm a little banged up with a bad foot. It was missing bad, cel on. Ran good the other day when I used it. Parked it and used the ranger. Anyhow, today I pulled the codes. 0113, 0603, and 0344. Not thinking the cam sensor would do this I changed it anyway. No better. Now the codes were 0113 and 0470. I pulled both the passengers side plugs to the vc's and it ran the same. I'm guessing I need a wiring harness, and will pull that valve cover in time, but I'm curious to as what set the cel, the 2nd time for sure, but both really. Any thoughts? Did it just come on for the rough running truck and didn't set a code?

I first tried to use AE to pull the codes. For some reason I can't get it to pull codes. Not the first time I've tried with no success. I connected to the truck, etc., and when it asked to pull codes I clicked on "All" once and "current" once, both times said no codes were present. What am I doing wrong? I went and got my scangauge from the other truck and pulled the codes mentioned above.

Wire going over valve cover can rub and cause the bank to go out or maybe bad connection at IDM on pin 42 if I remember right.

A short in an injector can shut down the bank to protect the IDM.

Time to OHM things from IDM connector to UVCH

I've ohmed the injectors through the vc's before and number 1 was 4.0 where the others were where they are supposed to be, 3.2 ish. I know they are weak, the truck has 374k and as far as I know they are original. Number 1 doesn't fire when cold. This time of year it has been, but last winter it wouldn't until it was warmed up a bit. Once I get all moved I'll bring it in the shop for more testing.

Darin would that truck happen to be a Cali ? They seem to be more sensitive to setting codes. I have s Cali here that I'm working on that if I unplug the uvch it'll set the cel but my truck won't.

I read the "missing truck" and my brain automatically went to stolen. Don't ask me why... Glad to read that isn't the case. Sorry I don't have anything to add about the problem though. Hope you get it figured out Darin!

LOL! I thought about that when I wrote the title Thomas. I was going to re-word it, but thought what the heck. I wondered if someone would think of that!

I am following this as I think I am using AE wrong as well. Not able to pull codes and not too sure on data logging either.

The other day, I was having trouble connecting to my 96. I had to connect to my 97 first, and then plug it into my 96 and it did fine.

For some reason it wasn't wanting to recognize the 96 but once the program was running with the correct protocol, it worked.

It sounds like one side of the engine was shutdown. Could be bad wiring, injector, or idm has water in it. Time to start testing everything.

I have found this procedure to work best for me:

Plug AE into OBD
Put in cord in computer, then to AE
Key on
Open program
Select vehicle then communication configuration
USB-J1850PWM-Non OBD II only
Vehicle-connect-Ford-year
Model is powerstroke 7.3
Enhanced powertrain

Thanks Glenn! I will give that a try. That usb line you posted doesn't look familiar so I'll see when I hook it up again.

Phil, that is for sure what is happening, one side shut down. That's the plan, get it to the shop and do some more testing. Thanks.

Thanks Aaron! Doc in town thought it was broken, but after seeing the ortho dude he said it is not. It's getting better. I can at least walk now, just a little limp.

After I get moved this weekend I'll get the truck in the shop to do some testing.

I got the truck in the shop finally. I tested the injectors through the harness and was getting an intermittent reading on both 1 and 3. I only tested the passengers side since it was the bank that shut down. Then for the heck of it I plugged in my spare idm. It ran just fine, until it realized there was a problem and shut down the same bank. So I pulled the valve cover. The outer harnesses looked fine. The inner was a totally different story. The front plug was almost welded together. I broke the heck out of it pulling it apart. There was nothing left of the gp's, and the injector connections aren't far behind. So off to riffraff to order parts. It looks to me like they are all original. At 374k I say they lived a good life.
