1987 box swap with 1984

Hi everyone,

So I recently found a box and a set of doors for sale which were sourced from a truck down in the southern states. Being in southern Ontario, Canada where salt use is rampant, its difficult finding anything that's rust free. Looking through the records for body panel interchangeability I've determined that the doors will match up, however I'm having a hard time determining whether the box will be a clean swap.

I'm under the impression that the frames are nearly identical from 84 to 89? In that case will I need to do any fabricating to get the box to fit? Also, my truck is 4x4 with dual gas tank. As far as I know the box is coming from a truck with a single gas tank. Will there be any compatibility issues there?

Sorry in advance if this question has been asked before.

Thanks

The box will fit with no modification. The body lines are different however and the wheel wells will not match. As for the fuel filler, you can move it to the whee well and fuel the tank from there. Not a big deal.

So overall then would you recommend it? And would the difference in body lines be subtle enough to get away with? Also given that I may replace the doors with the same same year as the box then would I be able to blend that body line in to the fender?

The other option would be to do some serious rust removal and patchwork to my current box.

Here is my 83 truck (80-86 body) with a 90 bed (87-97 style)
You can clearly see the 80-86 body line goes up and over the wheel wheel while the 87-97 body line stops at the wheel well and picks back up on the other side

The doors won't make a difference. As you see in Brad's picture, everything is the same except the wheel arch. Most people won't notice so it is up to you. I would do it and then either look for the correct bed later or take my time to fix the original one. Either way you will have a good bed to use while you decide.
