FOR WANT OF A NAIL....

the shoe was lost, for want of a shoe the horse was lost....

Well bonehead me lost one of the little retaining springs for a lifter piston body. Don't know if that is the right name but I don't give a flying EFF at this point.

I don't suppose any one has any old FE hydraulic lifters laying around that could sell me on of these?

This frigging engine is cursed. No actually, it's me. But for the life of me I can't figure out what happened to that thing. I was doin the lifters one at a time, piston by piston, cleaning them out and putting new oil in them and re-installing.

I cleaned off everything on my work bench, swept the entire floor where it possibly could have gone, and took a magnet through the sweepings and any spot that it could have crawled too.

Didn't know you could buy lifters individually? I assumed ( we know where that leads ) that you could only buy them in sets.

Thanks Doc, Todd.

Sealed power part number HT900 I think. (That's what they are for all the small blocks anyway)

I'd put in the new lifter & don't mess with the retainer clip.

Probably will just use the new lifter. I'm pretty sure dropping a new lifter into it won't be an issue

Put LOTS and LOTS of break in lube(some sort of moly lube) on the bottom of that new lifter. You don't want to grind it up in a few short miles. Though with the weak springs on these old motors you likely won't it is just good SENSE to make sure you get it prelubed really well.

I sprayed mine with dry graphite lube when I did my last cam job. Worked slick!

Also make sure the push rod is not bent any or it won't spin the lifter as needed.
Max out of alignment for a push rod is.020 bringing the rpm to 15-1800 will aid in getting it to spin tho.
Rolling each one of them on a nice flat surface, like the kitchen table then the wife in not home or looking.

The first thing to do when starting a engine that been pulled apart is check that it has oil pressure,
then see that all the all the push rods turning if some are not spinning.
