Where is the best place to buy a used transmission

How do you determine if it is a working unit?

Let's go back to the beginning. Why do you think you need one?

There is a neat gadget called a transmission dyno. The very best transmission rebuild shops will have one. You would have to be very good friends with the owner to get your junkyard transmission near one. Buy a rebuilt from a reputable shop.

The truck will only go into 2nd and 3rd gear. It will not go into reverse, first or into 4th. The automatic obviously has problems and I have Gotten a rebuild quote of $1,600 which seems Way too expensive.

1600$ is actually cheap.a properly remaned e4od/4r100 will be around twice that, installed with warranty to be built up and meet at least '95 specs.

if you feel 1600 is too much, just grab one at a salvage yard with at least a 30 day warranty.

as to your original question; where's the best place.many would argue Brains truck shop out in Arizona......but if you think 1600 is high, you probably wont like the 5k+ price tag. though one of his builds can hold up behind several hundred ft lb's of built up power stroke diesel grunt which is overkill for most of us mere mortals.

i used absolute transmission in Hermon Maine to have my e4 reman in chip truck.
