Help with a '48 3spd Trani main drive shaft

Can anyone tell me if my '48 F1 3 speed light duty(?) transmission with 16 tooth main drive gear (notice broken teeth on synchro side) matches Van Pelts pic with part #48-7017?

Will an 81A-7017 work as a replacement without modification?

Final dumb question..will a 15 tooth gear work?? Appear to be many available for considerably lower prices..just a thought.

Appreciate some feedback. Thanks.

There's more to it than just tooth count. Look closely at the synchro surfaces on those two, it's different, and the space from the clutch teeth to the drive gear, also different.

Stock for a '48 light duty would be a 1C-7017-A, or possibly an 8M-7017. You'd have to count the cluster shaft gear teeth to be sure. I suspect the 8M number is a carryover older style trans, but not sure. Call Mac at VanPelt's, he's very helpful.

Your brass blocker ring is clearly shot, but I don't know that missing those clutch teeth on the main gear is necessarily critical. Are more of them missing? How did it shift into 3rd?

I agree with Ross on the missing synchro teeth will not really matter.

Is that the only thing wrong with your input shaft? Also did you find the missing piece inside or was it maybe dropped years ago and just assembled like that before?

'48 f1 main drive gear

Actually..I broke it trying to clean and inspect the transmission. I found the broken piece.
I removed and thoroughly cleaned the remaining gears..bearings..shafts etc.

Getting those inserts to stay in the synchros when reassembling was a PIA..but a bigger PIA was getting the complete drive shaft and drive gear into the housing case without the front and rear thrust plates from sliding out of position..you're kidding me right..
I didn't realize the bronze synchro was shot..I'll replace it. But you guys think I can reuse the input shaft with the broken teeth??

While I have the trani apart..I'll take more pics tomorrow of the cluster gear, drive gear, synchros etc to see if you guys can see anything else that needs to be addressed before I reinstall..I replaced the three needle bearings and transmission gaskets.

DOH sorry to call you out on that haha.

Because they are only for the synchro you should not have any problems.

The way you tell if a blocker ring needs replacement is to shove it up on the cone and measure the clearance between the clutch teeth and the blocker ring. It should be as shown below. Mine with ~.050" work fine. I replaced one that was .035", and it improved shifting quite a bit.

On second thought I'm not going to remove the main drive gear and shaft for pics. .I'm not struggling with that reinstall again. I'll replace the bronze ring and bearing on the the drive gear and keep my fingers crossed.

Ditto on calling Van Pelt Sales. He has a book to guide you through your rebuild. It calls out the correct parts to match each combo. I wouldn't assume it was assembled correctly to begin with. I have found misfit parts.......Also the second gear fit is important to keep from popping out while driving, also covered in Macs book.
