How to remove backup sensors in rear bumper?

My Excursion had a mangled rear bumper when I bought it recently. I just bought a salvage one to replace it. I had it installed today. I want to salvage the backup sensors in the old bumper along with the license plate lights. How do these come out? They seem locked in there to me.

Exclamation

When dropping the bumper disconnect the wiring at the frame.

The retainer (in the bumper) has an interlock with the sensor. The retainer tab(s) can be easily pulled away from the sensor and the sensor removed.

It was a pain to get mine out when I swapped over to the 08+ rear bumpers. Being careful I think only two of the original mounts ended up being salvageable... didn't matter since you need the newer ones for the 08+ rear bumper. Work slow and take your time... once you get one out, you can see how they fit and that makes it easier.

The plastic can get brittle with age so work carefully. Trying to get the wiring harness off was a huge pain if you have to tackle that job. The retainers put up a good fight... I ended up cutting them all out and using zip ties on the new bumper. Watch out for the back up sensor plugs... each plug goes to a specific sensor... if you get it mixed up, I posted a thread here somewhere outlining which color goes where (learn from my mistakes lol).
