My steering is still like crap. I don't know what else to replace. The slop is in the box just like the last one. I hate this truck.
How much slop is it? Stock box or red head?
You gotta remember, when the truck is done you'll have one of the sickest trucks on the road! Not many guys out there with an OBS crew cab hauler still. They all have those fancy schmancy new trucks that you have to flash the injectors to the individual cylinders...
new Rebuilt box . about the same as the last one. tighter but...... the wheel moves about 2'' back and forth. The alignment is still not done so it could be some in that. I did not replace the ball joints but I don't think they are the issue.
In short, no. Have someone move the steering wheel back and forth, while inspecting the steering column shaft in the engine bay. Does the slop come from the column shaft/rag joint? Is the rag joint tight on the box shaft? Or if that area is tight, is the slop from the steering box threw tie rod ends? There are plastic slides in the upper shaft that can wear, letting the upper part move, with out moving the lower part.
Been there done all that 3 times. Slop is in the box. Both of them. What about air in the box or lines? I have driven it about 4 miles so I figured the air should be out by now.
This may not help much but my truck had a little bit of slop that was fixed after I replaced all the steering components (besides the box.) I replaced the box about 4 years ago and still had a little slop. During the 7.3 swap, I replaced the ball joints and tie rods. Now there is very little slop. I believe the stock type steering boxes aren't the greatest feeling which is why tons of people go with red head boxes. Those just cost a lot..
Yah. I will be sending the truck out for alignment and I will have the shop inspect everything. Better safe than sorry.
Where are you going to send it for alignment? Around here (Reno) it's hard to find a good alignment shop. When I replaced my ball joints and tie-rod ends I used one of those devices with a digital level to check caster and camber and I got adjustable bushings and I didn't get it 100% right so now I have to take it to a shop. Mine's a Dana 50 so yours should be simpler to set up.
That seems like way more slop than there should be. I think like Adam said you just need to adjust the box. Maybe the alignment shop can do that for you too.
Don't give up now, you're close to getting all the bugs worked out and having a really nice truck with that custom interior you did. Its gonna be sick.

Me and shops generally do not mix well.
I have a gun customer who has a shop and I have been told by many he is a good person to go to. Just need to get in line. LOL I'm trying to stay positive. I have a few issues to deal with on the interior. My door panel rubes the passenger seat and the paint comes off. also the gauge pod is hitting the drivers door panel and doing the same. both can be adjusted. I also hear a loose bolt or nut in the drivers door. It sure is nice to drive it. No tags yet but drive it around the hood for testing. I forgot it takes 4 lanes to turn this sucker around.
