wow talk about gutless
we made our once a year or so trip to Ontario from N.E. Indiana up through Sault St. Marie a few weeks ago and it was painfull. 2015 SD,4by, 4door Short bed, 6.2, 3:73's with 18' boat and trailer ect. I'm guessing high at 4k with boat and what was in the truck, I don't see how anybody pulls a real trailer with one of these trucks. Didn't even make out of Indiana, every overpass it down shifts at least once. Mich. was another story, I finally resigned myself to M and shifting it when needed to keep from screaming up every hill in 3rd at 70mph. I've made this same trip for a lot years in a lot of trucks and this was the sorriest ever. I love the truck locally and on the highway empty, but I'm thinking I should have kept the ecoboost. This thing has no bottom end at all, has anyone who is running a tune noticed any improvement in the low end? It doesn't seem like a tuner would do much down low but this thing definitely needs help.

I had the same experience, the 6.2 has no low rpm torque. I really hated hearing that screaming engine trying to pull a hill in third gear and I had 4:30's. I can't imagine how painful 373 would be. I should have kept my v10. I now have a 6.7 and have all the torque I would ever need.

I have a four horse gooseneck that I load 3 horses in, and a 33' 7800lbs fifthwheel. I have never towed with a diesel before but I like my 250 with 6.2. You have to remember these are a Boss engine meaning bigger bore and shorter stroke. They do need to Rev to hit peak output.

These engines love to cruise all day at 4 -6K RPM due to the short stroke. Once you get used to them running up there, they make sense. I have 3:73's and 35 inch tires. No problem hauling anything yet. It isn't hurting it to rev. That's where their power is. If its hilly and shifts a lot I just lock out 6th gear.

Yah mines tuned and de-catted and definetly not slow. 4k is nothing to pull. Three horse bumper pull loaded with three big heading horses pulls like nothing. Is it going to pull like a new diesel? No, I don't think anyone would think it does. Is it capable of hauling with authority. Hell yah.

I've pulled at least double your weight OP. I guess I don't know what your expectations are, but I have no complaints. If you think it's going to chug up the hill like an old Harley, that's just not how modern gas engines work.
You also have to understand that in this new transmission BOTH 5th AND 6TH gear are OVERDRIVE gears. 4th gear is slightly underdrive. So it's pretty obvious when you hit a hill of any real sort, it will down shift out of the OVERDRIVE gears automatically. It does this for efficiency purposes.
For me, I just put it in tow/haul mode, shift it into D and let her buck. Hell, most of the time the cruise control is on too. The engine/trans are torque matched in the onboard computer to work together at their most efficient rpm/gear ratio. I just let it do it's thing and we go down the road with no problems. I will occasionally lock out 6th, and seldom lock out 5th, if I hit a patch of road that it's constantly hunting back and forth between gears on.

I guess some people do NOT understand what a Overhead Camshaft engine is designed for...
385 Horsepower....400 foot pounds of torque...
its not a 460
and the 6.2 pulls 10k just fine. at 10 miles per gallon... not 6....
also the 6 speed has 2 overdrives... not a 4 speed with NO overdrives.

I'd gladly give up 100 HP at 5500 RPM to gain 50 at 2500 RPM on the 6.2. Yes, you have to scream the life out of the engine, & it gets annoying. Imagine towing 10,000 pounds daily in hilly SW Pennsylvania with one of these. Just keep your foot to the floor & try to ignore the tach & howling engine. 78,000 miles of this & it hasn't blown apart yet, although it does make rapping sounds at start up & rattles at idle. 2013 250 4wd long bed regular cab.

I'm very familiar with gas engines, overhead cam or not been driving and racing them for over 40 years. listening to a blown Cobra mustang at 5-6k gets me every time. The 11 F150, same basic layout, 3:55s and ecoboost, exact same route, same load downshifted maybe 5 or 6 times the whole trip. bash all you like but this thing is a slug. The suggestion to let Ford take a look was a good one that I'll follow through with but I haven't had the best luck with locals.

I don't want a gas engine that has to rev to make power. I want a gas engine that has torque down low. The 3v V10 is the best of both worlds, low end grunt and power in the upper rpm range, it doesn't rev as high as the 6.2 but it doesn't have to. In my opinion Ford made a mistake putting a high revving engine in a truck.

My 2012 6.2 4x4 F350 with 3.73's has no problem moving this trailer along at 75 mph. Granted - no big mountains like out West, but a few nice "hills" up and down the east coast. Did a great job. Trailer weighed in at 9876 lbs in the photo with the blue tt in the back ground.
