Fuel gauge didn't work - float came off

So my fuel gauge stopped working a few weeks ago. It just read Empty all the time. Even my ScanGauge read 0% fuel so I figured it was the sendor.

I ordered a new pump and sendor combo since my truck has 180k miles.

Dropping the tank was pretty easy. Even by myself. The tank was nearly empty so that helped. I had to jack up the truck a little in order to slide it clear. I put cardboard under it so I wasn't dragging metal on concrete with fuel vapors everywhere.

Pulled the pump out and immediately saw that the sendor was missing the black foam float.

The float itself was floating by itself in the tank. It apparently had wallowed out the hole to the point it could just float off the sendor arm.

I'm not sure if I'll still have this truck in another 180k miles, but in my attempt at fixing the problem I added a thin washer and secured it with the other retainer from the old pump.

But that tank pressure sensor that needs to be swapped to the new pump gets brittle and I snapped it in two. I have another getting sent to me next week.

I love having a backup vehicle.

Hope it wasn't a very heavy washer because it could cause your fuel level to read low all the time.

It still works. It's interesting to watch the ScanGauge fuel level reading when it's low. It'll oscillate between like 10-30% from the sloshing just from coming to a stop at a light. When it's full, it doesn't seem to move at all so far.
