Got my seat cover "kit" from LeBaron Bonney and decided to do the install....
I stripped the old cover and pulled off the padding for the seat bottom and found that the outer / upper frame was broken, and a few other things had broken as well in the spring section.
Well- I stripped the frame down in preparation for welding an additional brace to the broken section- but decided because I was in a hurry- to leave the burlap that surrounded the inner section of coil springs.
It looked like it was going to be a pain to remove it all and it seemed to be in pretty good shape so...
I set up the frame, made my brace and clamped it all up in preparation for mig welding.
First repair to one of the retaining arms to the front of the upper frame went well.
So- next up- weld in the brace, of course I used a piece of metal to protect the 63 year old burlap from catching fire.
Ooops- fire.
So after blowing it out it would smolder, then relight- I guess I'll unclamp everything and pick up the now burning (pretty good too) seat frame and take it out of the shop into the driveway where I can hit it with the hose...
Ok- next to spend an hour and remove all the old burlap before proceeding further.
Done- cleaned up - welded - a bit of paint and now to recover.
Started with the seat back- and realized that the cover was cut wrong. Scratched my head for a while trying to figure out if there was something I was missing. Nope- called LeBaron Bonney and got an email back asking for pictures.
Received word the next day that they indeed had made a mistake on my cover and would have a new one made and sent out within a few days...
OK then. This "quick - got a free few hours" project was taking a little longer than expected.
Decided to fit up the seat bottom and partially install the back cover so I could drive the truck while I wait for the correct back cover.
No pictures of the fire or aftermath- but here's one of the seat cover in the truck.
This cover was selected based on recommendations from the forum and despite the issue I had with the back rest cover I can say the stuff is good quality, company support seems very good also.
I used some members pictures of their install to illustrate the problem with my cover- Thanks!
