Frame Sandblasted

Was able to get the frame, differential, and some misc suspension pieces sandblasted, primed, and painted this weekend.

Sorry I haven't had much to update on the build lately.

I did however get the rest of the suspension pieces painted and reassembled the frame.

Also pulled in the parts car and pulled the 302 EFI engine and transmission to swap into the truck.

I was thinking along the same lines but using an Explorer IFS setup thinking that would be much stronger if I wanted to actually haul something. Any reason why you didn't go that way?

Crown Vic IFS has been used and documented well. I got the Police edition so it should be a little more heavy duty. Haven't seen anyone use an Explorer IFS. That could be interesting.

I most certainly did mean IRS, I guess the R and F keys being so close together didn't help. Or maybe I subconsciously refused to type IRS because of what it usually means?

Anyway, that is the question. It seems to me that the Explorer rear end setup would work better and be more in keeping, strength-wise, with the truck-ness of the vehicle.

I have a friend who put a Jaguar IRS under a Toyota pickup and he said the improvement in ride quality over bumpy roads was amazing.

Is the explorer a true IRS? I thought is was still a solid axle. I did the IRS from the Thunderbird because I had seen others do it and heard the ride quality was awesome. I believe I will still be able to do light towing and hauling. The only towing I will be doing is my popup camper which I believe it should handle fine. Guess I'm going to find out.

I don't believe the Explorer IRS is a 'drop out' unit like the Tbird or Cobra setup is.

I believe it is integral with the chassis and would probably require more fabrication.

Update

I've been really bad about updating the build and I have made some progress.

I've rebuilt the engine using stock heads, cam and intake from a fox body mustang.

And painted it the body color of the truck.

The motor is finally mated back with the transmission and is back on the frame.

With all the swaps going on we have ran brake lines, fuel lines, attached the steering, moved the gas tank back (even though I was told a stock tank would work with the irs swap), installed a mark VIII fan, and made a custom bracket for my AC compressor. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.

Right now we are mocking up the rest of the vintage air system, wiring and other things on the cab of the truck before we blast it and start the body work.

This is how she sits now.
