I currently have 29, we lost the rooster (AGAIN!) the first week, might have 1 or 2 more tho. The coop is well ventilated, and not overly crowded. MUCH better and more user-friendly design than my last one. And the yard is 24x24', and once they are full size we let them free-range.
You have 29 in in a 4x6 coop? we had 12 (now 7) in a 4x10 coop. the run is 10'x10'x20" fully wrapped in wire. the coop is on an old snowmobile trailer and whole setup gets moved periodically Are those meat birds or all layers? what do you do with them in the winter if they are egg layers?

Well, it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kinda thing when it comes to coop size. Too big becomes cold in the winter and too hard (or expensive) to heat. Too small means hot in the summer.

I figured I'd go with small, seeing as they still come out into their yard pretty much all winter. And if it's that cold they will need the body heat generated. Ventilation is plentiful so moisture shouldn't be an issue, regardless. My last coop was a tad bigger with a similar number and they had too much space int he winter, they all just pig-piled in the corners, anyway, lol

Plus this coop has 4 actual nesting boxes, so they will have separate space to nest.

Biggest things in winter are:
  • Ventilation is needed, ammonia will build up and is toxic otherwise.
  • Dry bedding. I prefer pine shavings, but hay is good as well.
  • Heated water, separate from bedding.
  • Heat lamp for those VERY cold nights, depending on breed maybe more.

Be careful with those heating lamps. I've heard plenty of stories of coops burning to the ground.

Greenville Maine - Gulf Hagas Trail AKA The Grand Canyon Of Maine 8/9/2015

so this weekend i go and do a camping/hiking adventure up in the center of Maine.home of some of the most beautiful landscape that Maine has to offer. This is where a monster lake resides; moosehead lake.she's the largest in Maine.
for this trip however i decide to tackle the gulf hagas trail for it's waterfalls and canyon views.i camp nearby, several miles deep into the woods far beyond the reaches of GPS maps and cell phone service.on the way in i spook a large bull moose as he runs down the dirt road in front of me......stop i proclaim! your my future injection pump lol! but he just kept going.getting dark and he was so quick i couldn't grab the cam in time.i get in,pitch my tent by the car headlights, crawl in and gaze upon the stars as the loons cries in a nearby pond sing me to sleep.

as i awaken,im anxious for a full day hike with lunch and drinks prepped.i pack up camp and drive yet a couple more miles to the hiking trail.

into the great Maine woods to see what there is to discover!

deep into the woods where i walk to parking area down to map marker #1 (i placed a pic of map marker #3 as it's more interesting with the waterfalls names)

i walked all the way down past the loop trail because i wanted to see the old growth pines.i then walk up to the scenic route back which follows along a large canyon with lots of waterfalls.
