2016 F-250 with 6.2 L. What mods to improve towing if any Buying 1st truck...
#31
Hey Dan,
My truck came with the 3.73 gears, which I've swapped to the 4.30s and are one of the best things I've done. If you're looking at ordering I'd definitely go that route.
And if you're looking to drive one before you make a purchase, you're welcome to drive mine. For what you're looks to do, the gas truck my be the better choice

What is pros of the 4.30? Daily drive but also towing. Would it hunt for gears going uphill less. Just pull better. Slightly worse mileage. Curious. I will order if buying F-250/350.
Regarding 6.2 over 6.7, I'm leaning that way. Lots less to deal with in time ans money.
What are mods to increase HP without voiding warranty?
Cold air and dual exhaust? If so, which. If I could pep her up a bit, would help.

I tow <9,000 lbs and don't really need a Diesel, but I drove a 6.7 first and was totally in awe of its power. In my testosterone-clouded mind, I was all set to pull the trigger on a new Diesel Superduty. However, my wife brought me back to reality really quickly. (She hates the smell of diesel; both the fuel and the exhaust. I catch heck if I come in the house with diesel on my shoes or clothes from my tractors, etc. ) She said that I could get the 6.7, but "I had better buy a real comfy one, because I'd be sleeping in it full time."
I drive a 6.2, and while I may not be the fastest one towing up a hill, I have no regrets. I don't worry about anything "testosterone-related" and I'm still driving a Superduty.

[QUOTE=RightWingNutJob;15521163]Dan,
Some of the stuff you want - leather, rear A/C, moonroof, etc., isn't offered at the XL or XLT levels. You'd have to go aftermarket. Try to configure your own Superduty on the Ford Build & Price site. It'll give you insight into what options are available for the truck you choose.
I like the ruby red color.

I was told to stay away from CAI's as they're not worth anything on this motor. Can't really go with an exhaust, as no matter what you get it'll drone and you do not want that while towing long distances.
Tune is the only way to really 'wake' this motor up, but you'll be throwing your powertrain warranty out the window if they catch you.. and they can tell you tuned it, even if you return it to stock beforehand.

One really important thing to remember about these transmissions. 5th and 6th gear are both overdrives. So if it down shifts to 4th, that's the best gear for torque without going all the way down to 2nd. Also if you will manually downshift at the bottom of a hill instead of waiting for the transmission to do it, you will find it works allot better.

If you can afford a 6.7 that's great. But as pointed out, the maintenance cost are higher. That's what turned me off about the diesel....cost and labor to repair.
While not new, I bought my 2011 F250 CC SB 2wd with the 6.2 in Jan.
It has 106K miles on it. Drives and rides like new.
It has the 3.73 e-locker rear.
Love the truck.
Plenty of power to pull my 7500 lb. enclosed trailer.
Best mpg I have gotten (empty) while keeping it under 60 was 17.4 mpg ( that's actual--the dash said 18.3)
I'm looking forward to many years with the truck.
My '84 CC 460 was 31 years old when I sold it, so if I can get 31 years out of this 2011 I would be pleased.

I ordered a 2016 F350 Lariat crew cab shortbed 4X4 with the 4.30 gears. I really wanted the diesel for the fun factor but opted for the gas because I am pretty confident I can run the gas truck past the expiration of the warranty. I would not do that with a modern diesel. My friend tows his fifthwheel (approx. 13,000#'s) approx. 8,000 miles a year and he says his 6.2/4.30 axle handles it fine. I just know that I am a worry wart and I would always be worried about things going wrong while on vacation with my fifthwheel. I think I will be able to enjoy my vacations a little more not worrying about my trucks def, dpf, injectors, fuel pumps, etc.

Very very good advice....on the interstate I use manual mode in 5th and downshift to 4th before going up a long bridge or grade...this works well towing my 5th wheel. If left in auto, the transmission would downshift to 3rd when not necessary.

You want the Snow Plow Prep package. It will give you beefier springs that allow 35" tires with no mods. Also gives you a better alternator.
I'd get an XLT just like this one: 2015 Ford F350 XLT, $37,939 - Cars.com
Here is it's window sticker so you can see how it's optioned. Has the rare 4.30 even: http://fordlabels.webview.biz/webvie...8W3B63FED14144
The 6.2L is not slower than the other gassers: 2014 Ram 2500 HD vs Ford F-250 vs Chevy Silverado 2500 0-60 MPH Mashup Review - YouTube
Here is what a tune will do: Ford F250 6.2L 5 star tuned 0-60 pull - YouTube
I'd remove the muffler first. A lot of guys like it and it costs under $100: 2012 Ford F250 6.2 muffler delete - YouTube

I would get the gasser if it were me. I think for your needs and wants it will exceed them, and you will sleep easier at night. I tow every single day with mine and tow at least 10k several times a month in a very hilly area. Never once regretted it. Also one thing to keep in mind is that the truck you test drove probably had not been driven much. Once these things learn your driving style it is a beast and screams. Sure it's not a diesel but I mean 10 or 15 years ago these hp numbers would have blown us all away.

My old Red 2008 F350 Diesel.....
My new 2015 F350 6.2 Gas......8" lift, 37's ordered with 4.30 gears and a lot of nice stuff like seat coolers and seat heaters to cool my butt in summer and to warm my butt in the harsh California winters that drop down to the crazy low 60's.............lol.
Sooooo get heated and cooled seats....Their GREAT!... Also you can not see them on Ford's but on both of my F350's I do have Amp Power Steps, worth every penny. Don't forget the 4.30's and 37's and a 8" lift and ...........................

I like the way you think. Can you buy 4.30 or do you have to order? What's the main pros/cons? Better pulling power with heavy loads, especially in mountains at cost of lower gas mileage with 4.31?
Been leaning towards 350 anyway. 250 vs 350 and gas vs diesel are why my trigger finger no workie.
Made three trips to Ford dealers last week and only looked at diesels. Wish I had test drove a 6.2 for comparison. It's hard being this smart. It really is.

I'll say this. I have XFE Stage 2 intake with 93 performance tune. Have been having shifting problems lately, thought it was the tune, but ford is replacing all the solenoids in the transmission, so that should fix things.
Now when I put the intake and uploaded the tune, I didn't notice a big butt dyno difference. Having the tune for a year now and taking the tune off and returning to stock to bring to the dealer and wow, definitely a difference. Much more throttle response and power when I had the 93 tune uploaded. Stock feels very slow. Being used to the tune really made me realize there is a pretty big difference. I don't know if I would say Night and Day, when I say that I'm thinking lengths in the 1/4, but it is a solid difference. This is driving, not towing, but hp and tq is hp and tq. This is with 4:30 gears.

ATP Pilot, i see you have the same truck i have. I've been trying to decide if i can tow a 10,500 empty 5th wheel. The wife wants a bed room slide and those in a nice floor plan are hard to find under 10,000 lbs. Do you have any issues towing your 5th wheel? Any info would be helpful. thanks
