Fixing to change clutch on my 1991 F250 7.3 4X4

I'm fixing to change the clutch and I'm asking for any suggestions, and also, there's something interesting that's been the case ever since I bought this truck if possible I'd like to fix why I have it down I was having problems with the drive shaft U joints going out at the axle (finally got that resolved) is how I found this the first time this happened I thought I'd just put it in 4 wheel drive and drive it home with the front wheels (after putting drive shaft in the bed) but front wheels would not engage, I've noticed that unless the rear axle is hooked up to the drive shaft the front wheels will not engage I've had 3 other 4X4's and I've never seen this, I've also talked to several people locally and no one can tell me anything, basically if the drive shaft to rear axle is not hooked up the front wheels will not engage, any suggestions or hints on both clutch change out and the other issue with the front wheels would be greatly appreciated.

I went with the LUK single mass fly wheel kit.

As far as the front axle. Are your hubs locked in?

Yes the hubs were locked I was able to role the truck back and forth, I had several opportunities to try this before I figured out what was causing my U joint to go to pieces once or twice a year, I'm certain the transfer case has been off before because there is a sloppy job done on the gasket seal where it bolts up, someone (a jack leg mechanic) has changed the rear axle to a higher gear axle and it's an older axle (I found this out when I went to do a brake job on it) and I feel pretty sure that when they did this they didn't change the front gears to match and and engaged the 4 wheel drive and well we know the rest of that story, when they put it back together I'm assuming they did something wrong because it acts like it is now driven off the drive shaft some how and I have no clue what to look for, scratched my head so much on this one I'm going bald

One thing maybe to try is to jack the front of the truck, lock the hubs and see if the drive shaft turns when you manually turn the wheel. Figure out if it's in the transfer case or the axle

I got it jacked up and locked the hubs and when I turn the passenger wheel the shaft turns and as I was checking I noticed that the U joint behind the rotor on that side is BAD (look's like another remove and replace job) as I turn the wheel on the driver side the shaft doesn't turn, as far as the clutch goes the flywheel is bad the springs inside the flywheel are busted and I mean busted every last one of them are broken in several pieces, Thanks a bunch for the advice I'll keep watching for any other advice, I may not respond immediately but I do appreciate it very much.
