90 F150 efi to carb swap

What do i need to do to swap my 90 F150, 302, AOD, to a carb? Most of the carbs I see in Jegs and Summit say not for use on Fords with AOD trans. Do I need a special Carb or get a C4. I am thinking of adding some performance to it. It's a nice truck. Extended cab, short bed, with no rust. Never had any. Or should I leave the EFI on it.

Is the engine running ok and EFI working? If, leave it alone.

Mild problems? Pull your OBD I codes, read up and fix it.

Must convert? The AOD uses a throttle valve to regulate pressure and in turn shifting. A linkage or cable from the carb throttle to the trans is usually needed and must be adjusted correctly or good-bye AOD.

There is a different valve body for the AOD which eliminates the TV cable/link.

So, EFI stay or go is the question. If you aren't having troubles or can fix little ones, leave the carb conversion can of worms alone.

+1 the what was said above. Unless everything is royally effed then keep the EFI, it's a pretty simple system to work on and EFI is just better all around.

90 F150

It doesn't run like it should. Maybe I should spend some time with it and straighten it out. I'm just older and am more familiar with carburetors. I grew up in the 50's and 60's. When I was a teenager, I thought my 65 Mustang was complicated.

I would think it would be more work and money to change to a carb than to run down the problem.

What isn't right about how it's running? Rough idle? Idles too high? Too low? it might not even be the EFI at all.

Start with a basic tune-up. Plugs wires, cap, rotor, air filter, ignition control module, and fuel filter. After that, pull the codes. If you search around you should find an explanation and several videos on how to do it or you can buy a scan tool for about $30 and it makes it easier. I prefer the scan tool.

Maybe some history will help. The truck had an aftermarket crate engine put in by someone who new very little about what he was doing. He couldn't get it to run. It sat inside about 10 years. I bought it not running. Got it home and most of the wiring and vacuum lines were connected wrong. I went over it and sorted it out as much as I could. It started right up. I haven't had a lot of time to work on it. It's real sluggish on take off and doesn't have good response to accelerator input. Sometimes it takes off good. I have done most of the things suggested, except, I haven't replaced the ignition module or checked the timing. I occasionally forget the simple things. I tend to over complicate it. It is a nice truck. I bought it in Alabama and it has never had any rust. It also has a rebuilt trans, new tires and new paint. I have a 2002 F250 that is about to rust apart.

Yes. Disconnect the SPOUT jumper and use a timing light like you normally would. Factory timing is 10 degrees, you can advance that a bit once you get her running good.

90 F150 efi to carb swap

Sorry to steal the thread here but I bought a 91 f250 with the 4.9 wasn't running right so I tore it apart pulled the motor doing a slight resto on it. But the wiring harness looks to be butchered... Which scares me the PO says it had electrical problems I have a 1993 could I use that wiring harness or should I go to a carb set up?

You should start your own thread. Your '93 harness will work if it is identical to the '91. The Six Forum will be your friend.

Ford Inline Six, 200, 250, 4.9L / 300 - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

OP will be needing more assistance, so please start another thread. Thanks.
