Looking at a high milage truck
Hi I'm looking to buy a new truck and I'm currently looking at a 1997 F250 ext cab long bed 4wd with the 7.3 V8 Diesel and it has 327000. I'm wanting to know if that's allot of miles for a diesel and what I should look and listen for when I go to start and look at this truck later this week and what should be the around the right price I should be paying for a truck with this many miles? It also does have a engine oil leak somewhere because there's oil built up I havnt been able to look under the hood or start the truck yet. Would this truck be worth getting in the first place is what I'm try trying to figure out before I sink allot of money into it after I bought it?

the '97 would be the power stroke so this is the pre-stoke forum before the power stroke era.you may want to ask over there in the 94.4-97 diesel section.
i wouldn't personally buy any vehicle with this many miles on it (at any price) but this is personal preference.the truck will be pretty well wore out and the drive train not far behind.the price should be extremely low due to miles and age.a many part truck don't have so many miles on them.
good luck!

Bought mine with 355K 2 years ago, and its at 374K now. Wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere. Its all in how they were taken care of.
Edit: Value will also depend on what part of the country your in, In my case I live in northern Illinois, but the truck was a New Mexico/Georgia truck, so its never seen salt.

Maddog, don't let the milage be the deal maker / or breaker. Yeah, its a lot of mileage but not unheard of. These 7.3 's are tough. Look it over, if you're not so mechanically inclined...... bring someone who is. Keep in mind that a new full size diesel truck will cost you $50,000 plus. It will probably need some work...but, if it's in decent shape go get it. BTW, at 300,000 I'd take mine anywhere...and I do. Good Luck

You could get a professional engine overhaul, professional injector overhaul, replace all of your brake parts, hoses, and oil, new tires, all new steering components and u-joints for like 10 grand. Add the transmission and you're ready to go for another 300k.
That's assuming the body, frame, interior, glass, and electrical is in good shape.
I bought my truck with 372k on the clock thinking the engine was toast. Like fordpride noted, it might be 472k. But it's one of the cleanest OBS trucks I know of that's never been repainted, so I was going to go through it as I stated above. But with a new IDM and Rosewood injectors, it runs great, and it doesn't burn or leak significantly. I do take it everywhere without hesitation. I figure I'll need an overhaul 3-4 years from now.

Aww heck she's barely broke in! Lol. I bought mine with 389,000 on the odo and it now proudly shows 302,000 (because it rolled over. Yup, it has 402,000 miles). Iv taken my truck from southern Illinois to North Carolina (24 hours non stop), to Wisconsin (8 hours non stop) and a bunch of other places while it was still my DD. Needless to say I wouldn't hesitate to jump in it and drive to Cali and back!
As for price, I paid $3000 for mine because the guy couldn't sell it due to high miles. It booked for something like $5000
