New guy... What have I got myself into? 1960 F100 & F250

So a few weeks ago I brought home a 1960 F250 we got it for a good deal and thought it might be something fun to get running and then just sell off. Well after looking at it and looking around on the internet of fixed up ones I started really liking what I was looking at. Next thing you know my uncle calls me and says he found a 1960 F-100 SWB that looks to be in good shape for a great price. Well he was right the CL add said it was a 1958 but it is truly a 1960. Long story short I called the guy made a deal with him and went to BFE yesterday over on the Oklahoma/Texas boarder and found this gem sitting behind a church. Now it's tear down time.

Here is some pics of both.

The 1960 F-250 2x4.

And the 1960 F-100 SWB. Sexy little gem.

what motors are guys swapping into these? I wanted to go with a 460 but thinking a 351 and a C4 would be easier.

Welcome to the Orphanage! Looks like you jumped in with both feet. Both trucks look to have plenty of potential.
You will find just about any engine/transmission combo stuck into one of these trucks, Diesel or gas. For most of us we are limited to whats available and afordable. These trucks have plenty of room, in the engine bay. The steering box is one of the limiting parts but you can usually offset the engine enough to accommodate a set of headers. My truck started life with 292 Y block 3 speed, then went to 351 C with C6, now 4.6 DOHC with 4r70w.
The three biggies are Brakes, steering and drive train.
Brakes are at minimum a full rebuild, with possibly dual master cylinder then maybe upgrade to disc.
The straight axle on these truck are pretty nice if rebuilt. Steering boxes can be rebuilt or changed out to Toyota power steering or after market boxes. It is becoming popular to graft IFS and even IRS.

What are your plans so far?

Thank you for your input.
Plans right now are to pull bed, cab, fenders off get the frame cleaned up and seal it. I would like to do disc brakes 351/C4 and drop axle. Then put her back together and just enjoy her for a bit tell I get an idea of what I want to do on the next go around.

Don't know if I want to do the drop axle or swap something like the crown vic like I see a lot of people doing.

The swb is a custom cab, nice. Personally, I like the straight axle fronts. You loose a lot of the charm of an old truck when you go to ifs IMHO. Depending on where you live, better brakes are the first order of business after you get one on the road. Power steering is nice but I wouldn't 86 a nice tight stock set up for it. My 60 will get the toyota box, because the original is shot and I just happen to already have a yota unit.

I am rebuilding a 57,and I am sure I am the odd guy out on my engine decision. But ,I am rebuilding the old y-block and putting back the three on the tree.
Your trucks look in pretty good shape. Thats one advantage you guys in the south have over us in the north.

Thanks for all the input guys. I have been leaning towards a drop straight axle and for sure a brake upgrade. Not real worried about power steering as a few of my other toys don't have it.

I pulled the seat and head liner out this weekend.... FULL of mouse crap. lol

This is an edge at the bottom of the dash that really likes to hold crud. You pretty much have to put a hose up inside of it to get all the stuff out of there.

Typical rust in my area is the mud traps, front fender bottoms, cab supports and right behind the lower fender in front of the door and the bottom rear of the bed below the tail lights. If you are from an area with a lot of humidity, look for rust in places the condensation drains off to, like above the windshield, inside of the front of the hood. Cab corners seem to rust on any truck, anywhere.
