Who's running military tires?

Hello everybody,

Yes I understand there is a search feature, but I can't figure out how it works to save my life so I just started a new topic.

I usually browse through the bump and dentside forums, and I'm still fairly new to this website in general.

I am in the middle of swapping a 94 f150 engine and trans (efi 300 and 4 sod auto) into my 74 f100 for reliability and mileage reasons. Here is my work log/build thread https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-thread-2.html

if you read it, ignore page 1, the current project starts on post 27 of page 2.

My question for this forum is who is running a efi 300/4spd combo with military take off tires? I am mostly interested in them for the price. I already own 16.5 alcoas, which will fit the military tires and look good at the same time.

I run a sterling 10.25 out back and will be eventually stabbing in a low pinion Dana 44 or 60 up front. Truck is 2wd as it sits. The current gearing in the sterling is 3.55:1. Would installing 4.10's be enough?

If anybody out there is running the same Combo what kind of mileage are you getting? Even if it's 10mpg I'll be pretty stoked.

I'm interested in either the 36" or 37" versions. I understand that the 36 is a bias ply, which equals a rough ride, is it really that noticeable? Would stepping up to a 37" be worth it for driveability reasons?

Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Not sure if you'll need 4.10's. In all reality, 3.55s might be good or even a taller gear with that 4 speed. Granny will get ya goin, and you'll have more overdrive. I rarely use 1st to take off with my 37s and 4.10s so if it were taller gearing I'd probably use 1st more. Either way, trying the 37s with your 3.55s first will allow you to get the most versatility out of your 4 speed. The if, and the only if, would be if your puny powered 300 will provide the grunt for this to be successful.

Bias ply really isn't good for the street. Stick with the 37s, they have great manners and you can't beat the price. I've run them for years because they're tough and I never wear a tire out, I always tear a side wall or suffer a puncture wound. The 37s are easily replaceable and cheap.

be aware, they can be a wh0re to bead. They sit in stacked piles so they get crushed over time, and sidewalls are stiff. With a thinner wheel it's easier to bead, but i have to go through 2 cans of ether to bead all 4. Some are easier than others, high ambient temp helps too, but a lot of shops won't be able to bead them conventionally.

My mileage with the stock 302 was 8-9. I'm getting 12-13.5 on the street now but I have a much different/better setup. I don't think 10 is out of the question and can be a reasonable expectation. Just don't be displeased with 9.

I run them on my 2000 7.3, with 3.73s. Works great but completely different drive trains. The price in my area is $400-500 for 4, I take them to the little tire shops to mount/balance them, usually $10 a piece. Discount also does it.

I ran them (MTRs not MTs) with the 460 in the truck in my sig. Not with a 300 though.

The 37" Radials were on my 86 when I bought it. Even with the gutless wonder 6.9 and 3.55 gears I could spin them all day long. TERRIBLE traction, but pretty good road manners. I hated them so much, I gave them away

Maybe I should have specified, I'll be using a auto 4 speed, not a standard. I kinda thought 4.10 was on the low end. Maybe closer to 4.56 or 4.88.

Solid advice

That's probably why all the YouTube videos I found of them were of how to set the beads

Even if I get 9 mpg on regular it will be cheaper then 9 on premium with my current 390
