Was curious (Autonation are an enormous dealer chain, and operate about 300 independent dealers).

I've used that dealership exclusively when ordering Ford parts (probably spent close to 8grand with them now! ) had a lot of success when I have called them. I'd give them a bell. If a part fails, it isn't necessarily their fault, its the part manufacturers fault for a poor batch, but still, they can hopefully replace/give you a refund for the 2 faulty units.
If I was you, I'd try and get a refund from them and see if you can source a part from another vendor (that may have gotten it from a different batch). Perhaps here:

My truck uses a different system (I haven't looked to see if it is still vacuum or not - but assume so)

I'll wait another day to see if they email me back with a reply, I'm not saying it's their fault I'd just like to get a good one and have the ESOF system working how it should.

IIRC I've see dorman Vac pumps on the net before, but both these pumps have the Ford logo cast in the top cover and the part #

Can you remember when you had your 03 or early PSD whether or not the vacuum pump started up after a night in the garage or did it hold vacuum?

Is there any one else out there that can answer that question?

Hi Blue

I have changed out my original vacuum hubs for the manual warn variety.
I have also swapped the original transfer case for a manual transfer case (I now have a lever that comes through the floor to put it in 4wd).
My PVH valve is still in the vehicle as I just removed the vacuum lines going to the front hubs and blocked off the lines.

In answer to your question, I just went outside and started my vehicle. The vac pump did not operate, but I only parked it 90 mins ago.
I will check it in the morning and will post my results. Hope this helps

Hi Blue

I just started the old girl up. The vacuum pump operated for 30 secs and then stopped.

Thanks for doing that, that means if your driving for 4-5 hours the vacuum pump will operate while your travelling and top the vacuum tank up?

Like Kramer - I had changed my hubs to Warns. And I can't recall hearing the Vacuum pump at startup (you couldn't hear much over the exhaust on my 7.3 :/ )
