LSD fix on a tight budget
#16
I am not insulted in the least bit, I am here to enjoy the community and learn all I can. I am fairly capable with my hands, but I honestly lack all the experience others here have. Be prepared for "dumb" questions from me because I am going to do as much of the work on this truck as I can, but there will be times it goes to the shop. Thanks in advance

That is a fair point, and the route i generally take. However I have dumped a decent amount of money into this truck in a fairly short amount of time, would love to find something that is budget friendly until I can do what I really want to do. The used idea another poster mentioned or perhaps a true Trac if there isn't to much more to buy may be the way I go. As always thoughts and considerations are always welcomed

If a limited slip is set up properly. IMOthey work fine.
I have set mustang ls up so tight it would scoot a tire a bit when turning right. Yea an ol wore out sloppy 300k ls is gonna suck. Clutches to rebuild are plenty cheap... I'm cheap but there is a difference in cheap..... and frugal and making the most of the money invested.

Yea, I am not going cheap for junk, no good cheap, I was really intending that to read frugal. I am throwing $$ into this truck like crazy, and need to catch a break somewhere. I have owned it less than a month and so far, I have a reman Tranny (hd tranny with a really hd torque convertor) on the way, a radiator and new hoses, tensioner pulley, AC serviced, and getting started cleaning up the motor to locate and start repairing oil leaks. I got what felt like a good deal when I bought it, but now starting to think I picked up someone else's headaches.
*Note I had been looking for a Powerstroke 7.3 OBS style. Wasn't really looking for a 4wd or one that had been heavily tuned. In hopes I would find one that would have been used more like a truck and less like a toy. So when I found this one I was excited about it on the test drive (it rode great, felt strong). And it didn't appear to have had any tuning done on it, and got carried away with that "buying what ya want" experience, and overlooked a few things (mainly the 'fix' someone had applied to the tranny cooler line) No regrets really, just gonna have to spend some $$ getting it the way I want it. Eventually I will have this truck in fine working order.
Uses..Daily Driver/Farm Truck/Towing

While we are on the topic of my rear diff..
I believe my tag indicates that I have a 10.25 Ring gear, with a 3.55 gear ratio. I do intend to use this truck to tow, hence the upgraded tranny..I have seen others talk highly of the 4.10 gear ratio. I understand that I would get less fuel mileage with the 4.10, any estimate of how much worse? What else could I expect if I went with a 4.10 when upgrading to a limited slip such as the True Track? Will the 3.55 do well towing? I will be towing livestock occasionally, and also towing the tractors MF 245 and a IH Farmall *its light for a tractor*. (one at a time, lol). While I am at the rear diff, might as well and do anything that is needed while I am there.

Or in the meantime see if I can find a used rear end with 4.10 and LSD.

Remember you will have to change the front gears too...
I pulled my trailer with 3.55's, but have switched to 4.10's and its much better. I basically pull the same as Glenn does so it makes a very noticable difference. Depending how much you pull, you can use the 3.55's, they just aren't as nice to tow with.

As heavy as I have towed is about 11k and I have 3.55s . getting it rolling is murder on the torque converter. I am easy on it but it is deff not ideal. I however don't have that tractor or trailer anymore. My camper is prob 7k so I think my 3.55s will be OK. I just don't need 4.10 as much as I dd mine some times.
