99 ranger door ajar light stuck on
Like the title says, my 99 ranger has the door ajar light stuck on, which in turn is making the dome light stay on. It's kinda been acting up lately, but would go out eventually. Today I washed it and had the doors open for a while. After I shut the doors and started it the light stayed on and hasn't gone off since. I pulled the negative cable tonight.
Anyone have any ideas for me? And no, the doors aren't open! FWIW I cant pull the doors any tighter closed and make the light go out.
Thanks

I'll see if I can get things started. Maybe all you need is to spritz the door latch area with WD-40 to loosen up the switch contact, as many have had success just doing that. Have a read through this multi-page thread for some other ideas too & let us know how it goes. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...he-switch.html

Ok good feedback & to hear all seems well for now.
PB Blaster is for metals & isn't friendly to plastics as its a stress crack promoter for some. So if you have to spritz the lock mechanism again in about 6mos when the problem usually returns, it might be advisable to consider using a more plastic safe product to lube things up. What we're trying to do is get in there & lube the switch plunger, which likes to hang up & its plastic along with some other parts around it.

I have a 1997 and if you remove the inside door cover (screws at crank and screw in arm rest then lift and pull out bottom) look in the door and you can see the electrical wires on switch on top and one switch on bottom dome light and door ajar light. I lubed the switch and all still working years later.

My '96 had similar issues after I got it and it sat around while I rebuilt the front axles and all (about a year). The dome light was staying on a lot and the dinger and the door ajar. I tried everything suggested above and finally ended up replacing the "door ajar switch" which is a real pain to change because it's inside the door where your hands don't fit well. Been driving it for years now without any further hint of problem.

Ooo I just fixed this same issue.
Try lubing your door latching mechanism with some white lithium grease (any auto parts store will have it in a spray can) , if you have the door panel off poke your head inside, you will see the door switch attached to the latching mechanism, lube the switch best you can as well and give it a few closes.
If it still doesn't help pick up a Ford Door Jamb Switch # XF1Z-14018-AA I believe any auto parts store can get them cheap for under $15, Mine cost me $6. With the new switch in hand disconnect the wire harness from the existing switch in the door and plug it into your new one. Give the switch a couple presses with your thumb and see if your dome light goes out. If so you will need to remove the door latching assembly to install the new switch...if not you are looking for a broken wire some ware either in the door hinge area or the dash (The break is usually in the hinge area inside the rubber wire boot that connects the door to the body).
*Removing the door panels is super easy, just a couple screws and the whole panel lifts up and off. Lots of good videos on YouTube for removing them.*
(if you have a crank window you will need a hex driver to remove the crank)
