Which direction to go with custom exhaust (89' F150 4x4 351W)

Hey all,

Still in the planning stage of my first build. I will be dropping in a rebuilt 351w into my daily driver (89' 4x4 lariat 5sp short bed) and I'm unsure of the best exhaust for my needs. I will keep it SD with upgraded cam, otherwise bone stock engine. I would like some good low end torque compared to my tired 302. In trying to keep is simple and stock as possible, I like the potential gains from long tubes, into 3" y pipe, and I want to keep a cat in the system.

My question is that is doable to run long tubes into a 3" y pipe and exhaust while still keeping the EGR tube and O2 sensor? Would this be something that a qualified muffler shop could install if I purchased the components? Or am I better off just running shorties? I want best results without biting off more than I can chew, though am prepared to tackle the best option if the results are worth it. Thanks guys!

There is no need for a 3" Y-pipe, use 2.5" tubing. I had a muffler shop install the first system I had with longtubes and it worked quite well.

So I assume I would need an aftermarket Y fitting as the stock Y pipe set up isn't possible with long tubes? Also, if you kept the EGR and 02, how did you go about locating them, or just match the distance with stock?

My aim is to keep things as stock as possible to avoid any issues with ECU codes and such.

There is not an aftermarket Y pipe for long tubes. You'd have to have a muffler shop make it.

I'd just run the Summit Brand (Pacesetter) shorty headers and a 3" single exhaust. This is what my setup will be when I get around to my 5.8 upgrade project. I'll be going with a fairly stock build as well. You can get an aftermarket Y pipe for this setup, but I'd just get a Magnaflow or similar high flow cat and have the shop of your choice build a system.

long tubes, 2.5" Y pipe, single 3" exit. don't bother with your egr tube, block it off at the intake manifold with a penny, leaving the sensor and valve in tact, and be happy youre not ramming crud down the throat.

Yes. Magnaflow makes parts like that..

Put a bung for the O2 in the passenger side header collector and if you get Pacesetter headers for exmple they will have an attachment point for the EGR tube. The EGR can be disabled without causing any noticable issues but there isn't any power to be gained.

Good luck on the fox body headers. Every set I've ever seen runs the exhaust right into the firewall. Break out the sledgehammer to make room for it.

No, no. Even the shortys run them too parallel with the ground.

Yeah shortys for sure I don't need the 2 hp gain from long tubes if I have a set of 1 3/4 shortys and upr x pipe sitting here. I wonder why no one else has done it?

Too parallel? The h pipe comes up similar to where the stock manifolds are. The only real problem I see is the tranny x-member.

Because it won't fit on a truck.
