400 engine advice...

ok my 400 engine has extremely low oil pressure at idle it has one hundred and seventy seven thousand miles on it but still runs good I am thinking of dropping the pan and putting in a high volume oil pump any recommendations? Also I think there is enough room to drop the pan without taking the engine out?

Pan drop was easy on my '77 F-150 4x4 351M ..... first drop panhard (trac) bar at frame end bracket.

Once there, pull a rod cap and a main cap and look at bearings .... easy to replace working frt to rr.

That's a great idea thanks! it probably needs main bearings as with the mileage on it I'm sure they are shot and that is where I am losing all of my oil pressureHeck a guy could even re ring it...

..... if he had the heads off .... that's how our local Chrysler Plymouth Dealer reringed our '68 Plymouth Satelite Sport Wagon 383 back in the early '70s when it was using excess oil under warranty. I went by one day to get something out of the car and there was the block still in it, top end / heads / pan off and pistons out.

Ran as good as ever when we got it back.

When I did my '77 back in November 1992, it had 75,000 miles. I had driven it part way to and back home from Georgia with a oil press gage that was not working I thought. Turned out, it had worn out mains and rod inserts. I also installed a new HV oil pump. We got bearing size by measuring the oem inserts on the sides near tang where not worn. She has been fine ever since, far better than I hoped. That was 30K ago and she still makes better than 60 psi once warmed up .... more when cold.
