Homemade Smoked taillights?

In the process of re-doing my 1978 F-350, but thought if I could figure out how to smoke my own taillights out or find someone to, it would really be a neat look for the older truck. Any help or ideas?

I've never used it but I've heard VHT makes a spray that would work for that. Google "how to smoke tail lights" and see what you come up with, there's tons of threads on it on the mustang forums.

Rustolem makes lense tint, and it looks really good as long as you clean everything well before you spray.

Duplicolor makesa a "Black Chrome" kit. Basically it's a candy black and a clear coat.

Personally, I try to lessen the chance, excuse, or reason for any county mounty to pull me over.

I've heard good things about VHT nite shades.

Another thing to think about is how much it will decrease the visibility of your taillights, especially during the day. If you want them much darker than stock, maybe think about an LED conversion, otherwise people following might have a harder time seeing them.

i used the vht spray can to do mine. looks good but they are almost impossible to see in the day time. granted i did about 3 coats cause i wanted mine as dark as i could get them. its lasted over 3 years or so without and fading.

Who or where would I look for an LED conversion? Or do you pretty much make your own conversion?

You can get LED bulbs from about any company that sells parts for these trucks but an actual LED tail light I haven't seen for a styleside truck. They make them for the flareside trucks though.

Yeah, I don't think it would be hard to modify the bump LED conversion to work the dents. I am in the process of making my own, I just don't really like the way the LED bulbs look in our trucks. I plan on converting all my lights to LEDs without modifying the wiring or lenses much.

There are no off the shelf complete LED taillights available that I know of. I remember seeing a guy who had put one of these in each taillight housing. I think he pretty much just traced/cut holes in the back of each housing and secured them in there. I looked for the posting but couldn't find it. Didn't seem too complicated though.

That should be easy enough: they sell LED plug-in replacements for 1157, etc. bulbs. I've been thinking about doing that.

IIRC, LMC offers LED tailights.. has a pigtail and all you do is plug 'em in.

I am with the same thought process of of HIO Silver, I would not do it just to be cool.

In fact I hate it when I come up behind some yahoo tuner car with those blacked out tail lights. FAIL

Great way to get rear ended IMO. LED taillights is a way better of an idea, also IMO.

Back in high school a buddies dad ran a body shop. . he homemade smoked about half of my buddies trucks.
Said he mixed a little black in with clear coat.and on his f100 he mixed in a little bit of his turquoise green. .
But if you don't have clear and a spray gun sitting around the tint spray should work.

Going to look into the LED swap myself. Stocks are jus to dim for today's idiots. Its amazing how the lights just get brighter and brighter. Dads two model Ts have got oil lamps for taillights, he got pulled over the other day and the cop told him he didn't have taillights, he walked back there and opened the light and told the cop his lights were still on

sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper, put in the 225 degree smoker with mesquite wood for about 18 hours...
