No such thing as half seized.

Sounds like your batteries are junk, but the alternator should of given enough voltage to keep the fuel shut off solenoid open

Gotcha. Well I got everything put back together and started it up. Has a bit of greyish smoke coming out of the tail pipe and a lot of rough idling. I'm wondering if this has something to do with water in the fuel system? I heard that water in the fuel can cause surging and it often would surge when I was low on fuel or right after I would fill up. How would I go about checking this? I know there's a fuel/water separator but in the two years I've owned it I haven't touched it. Thoughts?

Thanks

Take it out and run it like you stole it, then drain off some fuel from the bowl into a glass jar. Let it sit over night and see if you have any water in the bottom.

Change it at LEAST once a year or every 2 oil changes, which ever occurs 1st

Okay I need to know how to drain the fuel out. I know it's simple but while waiting for your reply I went out and tried and apparently the 10% rule beat me. I couldn't figure it out. Google was useless to me on this one.

Thanks again

And I'd suggest doing like tom suggests. Fill it with atf, run for 30 seconds and let it sit overnight. It will help to clean out your injection system.

Pull the yellow lever on the top center left of the fuel bowl and it drains out the front left of the motor. I think the lever moves 90° to open. I used to set a 20 oz pop bottle on top of the tie rod with the drain line into to the top.

Ha! I know I'm in the wrong section of the forum but you guys seem to know alot about these trucks, even the IDI's. I really appreciate everyone's help so far. So my guess is the above explanation on how to drain will not work on my IDI?

Thanks again and A+ for all

You are right, Glenn's way will not work on the IDI. These have a 2 piece fuel filter, a replaceable upper filter, and a lower aluminum lower bowl that screw onto the upper filter. the lower bowl will have a **** that is connected to the drain screw, which is on the very bottom of the bowl. Turn the **** to open the drain screw. If it has been a while, get a new filter and change it, filling the filter with Powerservice diesel klean, or Howes diesel treatbefor installing the new filter. Then start it, let it run for 20-30 seconds then shut it off, and let it soak over night, then take it out and run it like you stole it. This will clean out the deposits from the injector pump, and injectors, and may smooth out your rough idle.

Good to know, thanks for the explanation. I'm planning on buying both a new filter and some additive from Napa today on my way home. With any luck this will clear it up.

I'll keep you posted, I appreciate it.

Okay so I've replaced the filter, put in the fuel additive, and bled the valve when it was put back together. Absolutely NO CHANGE. I'm stumped, it must be something bigger. Or something smaller that I haven't thought of. I'm thinking of hauling it into the Diesel Specialist shop this week..

I've really appreciated all of the replies and insight. Anything else welcome of course! I'll keep y'all posted.
