engine hydrolock
Good morning guys,I have a question about the 6.0 liter diesel. I have heard about engines run fine and out of the blue when trying to restart they hydrolock. I just spoke to a customer of mine and was telling me about his 6.0 where the truck was running fine went into the store then when he went to start the truck it wouldn't start, he had it towed to the shop and they found the engine was hydrolocked. What's the cause? Thanks for your interest in my concern.

Two reasons this can happen.

1st and most common is the egr cooler failing. If this happens and you park on a hill nose up. Alot of times one of the rear cylinders can fill with coolant. You don't have to be on a hill. It just makes it happen faster. If your egr cooler has failed. Usually you can smell coolant being burned out of the tailpipe. Also there is usually a large cloud of white smoke that lingers and smells sweet.

2nd and kind of rare is a broken injector tip. If this happens your cylinder fills with liquid diesel instead of being "misted". Usually this casues catastrophic engine failure. Due to pistons being burnt through or cylinder walls being scored up by the actual injector tip.

I hope that answers your questions. The 6.0 properly maintained and looked after is a amazing motor. It is a complicated one to be sure. And most mechanics have zero idea how to approach it.
