I didn't feel that you were picking on Texas. But, I have to say that if I had a couple of guys hanging out around a street corner with nothing more to do than look cool with their long guns, I would get a tad nervous myowndamnedself.

Sometimes there are a dozen of them.

CT has open carry, although I wouldn't recommend actually doing it.

I think I'd like to retire in Stanley, Tasmania.
Quaint seaside town. Not too hot, not too cold. Laid back lifestyle. Houses and land are not that expensive.

Virginia has the world's largest naval base. Just sayin'

We also have tons of history throughout the state. There are Civil War monuments and the final battle of the Civil War was fought a couple hours from Norfolk. It gets hot here, but it's temperate enough to ride a motorcycle about 10 months out of the year.

I grew up in the Florida Panhandle, and I still call it my home, as most of my family still lives down that way, but let's face it, Florida is FLAT. Kansas ain't got nuttin' on Florida for flatness. Florida has water, though. In abundance. If you like watersports, Florida is a great place to consider. Rivers, lakes, streams and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Atlantic ocean make it a destination for water enthusiasts. Just watch Alan Jackson's video Chattahoochee (I grew up a few miles from this river):

LOL, that's always been one of my favorite songs. It's funny, for all the rain we get here, we don't have many good bodies of water for boats and such. If I want to use my boat my option is about 10 miles to the Willamette river, which is small, polluted, and crowded, or Detroit Lake, which is small and 2.5 hours away. Last year we broke down in the main shipping channel of the Columbia river, and almost got hit by a container ship. Not doing that again. Even in the summer the water stays pretty cold too.

I think Florida might be a bit too warm/humid for me. I do like somewhere that has good seasons, I like the snow, I like the heat, but I also like some change. Oregon is nice because it never gets really hot or really cold, but it's always so gloomy. I think I'd rather have to use A/C than a heater. I tend to be pretty sweaty, even in Oregon, so hot and humid ain't my thing.

Whatever I do, I'll probably end up a good 30-60 minutes from a larger town. Most stuff I buy comes off the internet anyway. I'll probably get an efficient vehicle to make that trip easier. I wonder how long this cheap fuel will last?

Interesting, still dropping here. I just paid $1.99 for diesel - the cheapest I have ever bought! (Didn't get a diesel truck until prices got high)

Either way I want my own gas station at my new place. Going to have a bulk tank for gas, diesel, and propane.

The Iowa class battleship USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is also located in Norfolk, the other 3 Iowa class BB's are also preserved as museum ships.

There are 4 other BB's preserved as museum ships...including the USS Texas, the only BB extant (afloat) that served in both World Wars.

Much like the residents of New York City that have never been to the Statue of Liberty, a lot of Hampton Roads residents have never been to the Wisconsin, including me. I've lived on ships, so I don't feel the need to visit one for fun.

My previous post was just an aside to all the gun rules that were being mentioned. If one does not like the humidity, then the entire Eastern Seaboard is probably a bad idea. Florida is humid on an entirely different level, however. You do get used to it, but it's jungle humid down there sometimes.

If I could live somewhere else, I'd probably choose either rural Ohio or Tennessee/ North Carolina.

Ohio is where my wife was raised and I fell in love with the rural nature of the state the first time I visited it. There are a lot of open roads and fields but they have a pretty harsh winter.

Tennessee, near the Asheville, NC area and Deal's Gap is motorcycle nirvana, as far as I'm concerned. The roads are winding and mountainous. The people are pretty friendly, though a little liberal in nature around Asheville, and there's a lot of interesting stuff in the area.

Ever think of New Mexico?

Inexpensive (not Santa Fe), wide open, beautiful, lots of topographical diversity.

The Best Places to Retire 2015

Ecuador—The World’s Number 1 Retirement Haven
“A doctor’s visit will set you back around $10, while a main course in a restaurant can be had for as little as $2.50. The bus trip from Cotacachi to Otavalo will cost you 25 cents.

endless blue horizon of the ocean and the vibrant coastline of the country that enjoys dark sandy beaches, vertical coastal cliffs, volcanic rugged peninsulas, clear blue coves, small green topped islands, lush green jungles or scenic historical villages. The large towns are also numerous, while the beautiful panoramic roads that run alongside the very coastal area offer striking sights to witness to all these fabulous natural features, mentioned above. And that's only along the coastline of Ecuador. Right in the middle of the country and almost in a perfect straight vertical direction stretches the amazing Andes Mountain Range.

Most states even east coast states with California the clear outlier are ok to deal with on emissions but it's the things like safety inspections, tire size and lift laws, etc that are prevalent in many east coast states. Not sure about specifically Virginia?

Uhm yeah, people assume Texas is very gun friendly, there are better states in that regard, of course worse though also. But check this out, a big part of why I'm in Washington, a blue liberal state that allows gay marriage, legalized pot, all state wide offices are held by Democrats, etc. However when it comes to guns we have; Right to carry with a permit that only requires the legal ability to posses a handgun and about $55. Open Carry, loaded, handgun, long gun, whatever. A version of the castle doctrine and stand your ground. The only functional restriction over federal is full auto. AND get this, a law that NO other state has. If you use your gun, are charged with a crime and later it's decided that you used it in self defense, it is state law that they must pay you for your expenses, legal fees, lost work, etc.

That's not a problem for most democ-rats. I didn't mind the weather in Oregon. The winters are a little cold but if you move south to escape the cold you might not like the hot, humid summers you get in return.

Another poster made a good point about having the winter blues. My mom lives in Minnesota but goes to Arizona every winter to get out of the cold. If you don't have to hold down a job there's plenty of open spaces down there. My mom has a house on a golf course. When she's not using it there's a company that rents it out for her
