My Complete LED swap on 05 EB Excursion

Here is a complete list of the items I used to swap out all of the incandesant bulbs with LEDs (except dash and head lights) on my 2005 Eddie Bauer Excursion.

Grand Totals
14: 194 bulbs (20 LED) running boards, glove box, marker lights...
6: 39mm Festnoon (16 LED, White) interior dome/overhead lights
4: 29 mm Festnoon (3 LED White) vanity lights
2: 3157 Amber (45 LED) Front Turn lights
2: 3157 Cool White (45 LED) Rear Turn/Brake lights
2: 3156 Cool White (60 LED) Reverse Lights
2: 9145 White (68 LED) Fog Lights
1: EP27L 5 Pin Ford Flasher Relay

Important Note- In order to use LED Turn signal bulbs you must replace the factory Turn Flasher Relay which is located under the dash and above the ODBII port. There are videos on You Tube about this. It is very hard to reach, but you can replace it without removing the entire dash panel. The only thing I removed was the Fuse Panel cover under the Steering Wheel. The Relay panel is pretty small as it only has two relays. The one you need to remove is larger and is blue in color (unless it has been changed). You do not need to purchase/install any resistors as long as you get the correct Flasher Relay. I bought mine from Super Bright LEDs as well as the Front Turn (Amber) and Rear Turn/Brake (White) bulbs.

194 bulbs (27mm tall total (bulb area: 10mm wide, 11mm high, purchased thru eBay)- These are used throughtout the vehicle. But here is a list of all the locations I used them in. Running Boards (4, need 8mm and 10mm ¼” ratchet ), Glove Box (1), Front Marker Lights (2, 7/32” socket with nut driver and 6” extension, 4 bolts per head light and 4 across the top of the grill), Front Dome (2), Tag Lights (2), Third Brake Light (3, Phillips head screw driver). These were purchased from eBay.

39mm Festnoon (16 LED, White) These are for the interior roof lights. Second Row (2), Third Row (3) and Cargo Area (1). These were purchased from eBay.

29 mm Festnoon (3 LED White) These are only used in the vanity mirrors. You only need a very small flat head screw driver to pry off the bulb cover to replace these. These were purchased from eBay.

3157 Amber (45 LED) Front Turn lights- Make sure to get the Amber colored ones if you are using stock headlight housings. As listed above you will need the updated LED compatible Flasher Relay for this to work correctly. Use a 7/32” socket with nut driver and 6” extension, 4 bolts per head light and 4 across the top of the grill to access the head lights. Also make sure that the bulb you by is the same basic size (height) as the incandesant bulb you are placing. That way you wont have any fitment issues. I purchased them from Super Bright LED.

3157 Cool White (45 LED) Rear Turn/Brake lights- You can get the White colored bulbs if you are using the stock brake light housings. You only need a 15mm Torx bit/driver to remove the brake light housings. These were purchased from Super Bright LED.

3156 Cool White (60 LED) Reverse Lights- Installs at the same time as the Rear Turn/Brake bulbs. These were purchased from eBay.

9145 White (68 LED) Fog Lights- Installs with no tools. These were purchased from eBay.

I do not plan on installing any LEDs in my instrument cluster at this time but perhaps someone else can provide the necessary information about that project.

I hope this information helps someone else complete this mod. Feel free to send me any questions that you may have.

Awesome write up!

How did you release the bulb from the 2nd row overhead lights? I can easily pop the fixture but couldn't figure out how the bulb comes out!

The Second row bulbs are the 39 mm festoons. From what I remember you use a very small flat head screw driver to remove the lense covers. I used the smallest flat head that I have to remove the lense cover. I don't think you have to remove the entire housing from the headliner. But you can if you want to. Once you pop the lense cover off it should be very easy to remove the factory bulbs and replace them with the LEDs.

Nice. I too have switched to almost all LEDs. One of the best mods you can do in my book.

FYI you will have much better lighting in the tail/brake lights if you use RED LED's. you need to match LED's to the color lens they are behind.

It really depends on where you buy the bulbs. I have seen some of the bulbs sold individually at auto parts stores and they would be $7 a piece. I bought a lot of mine in bulk. The majority of the bulbs I bought were from eBay via China and were pretty cheap. But I did buy extras in case any were damaged. Plus all of these are made in Asia anyway. It did take about a month to get them, but they all worked, no problems.... The one thing about LEDs is that they normally have a polarity, so you have to install them the correct way or they won't work. If you plug one in and you get nothing, just spin it around and it should work.

The ones from Super Bright (Turn/Brake) were expensive and I got one extra a piece. The Turn Flasher Relay from Super Bright was only about $12.

In total I think I spent somewhere around $350-$400 for everything.

I got all my interior lights and running board lightd off ebay for around 20 buck and i had enough to do my buddys too and still have some left. And they are stupid bright. Only thing i have left to get are turning bulbs and tall light bulbs and also dash lights when i decide what color i want to do. I did these ones for all the 194 spots http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=400735723622
And i got something like these for the 39mm spots

Those should work just fine. There are many different variations for these bulbs nowadays and getting the error free non-polarity ones would make the install a little easier.

Make sure you buy the LED Capable Flasher Relay for the Turn/Brake bulbs or they won't work correctly.

Wow, this is a great thread. Thanks for this. Any chance we could get more pictures? I bet we could get more folks doing this mod if we had a 360 walk around and inside shots. Kind of like with the liftgate lift support thread, we had tons of people doing the swap to upgraded lift supports after they saw the difference. Thanks again, looks amazing Rottweiler.
