F250 Purchasing questions
Hi All,
I am considering buying a 2014 F250. I have been toying around with upgrading from an F150 for a while and I saw one I really liked. so a little about the truck:
2014 XLT Super Crew Cab
6.7 Diesel
17K miles (seems a little high, more on this in a bit)
Dealer is asking 42K
So while its not a king ranch, it does give me the towing capacity I need for my larger boat. So I checked on the car fax and here is what I found:
1 owner and the owner was a car rental agency
for 17K miles, the maintenance record is a little spotty.
There are a couple things that stick out:
1. at 1600 miles, it says:
Maintenance inspection completed
Transmission computer/module replaced
Transmission checked
Brakes checked
Battery/charging system checked
Engine/powertrain computer/module checked
Tire condition and pressure checked
2. at 17K miles:
Maintenance inspection completed
Transmission computer/module replaced
Transmission checked
Automatic transmission pan gasket replaced
Valve body replaced
Valve body overhauled/resealed
Tire condition and pressure checked
While I would like a bigger beefier truck, and it comes with a 7 year/100K powertrain warranty, I dont want something that is going to be in the shop often.
It seems after having it for a year, the rental agency sold it (maybe via auction) in late july and the dealer picked it up.
So my questions:
1. Is there a known issue with the transmission with these trucks?
2. Does this sound like a lemon?
3. almost 4 months sitting on a dealer's lot seems pretty long. however, that may or may not be true with higher priced trucks. Is well over a 100 days being for sale normal?
4. Given the fact that the rental agency sold it, should I even consider it? If so, what is a fair price? 42K for an XLT, even with a powerstroke seems high.
any insight is appreciated.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the posts. I did go out and price what it would cost to by a 2015 model at it was around 51K, so at a price of 42K, its not really a deal. Given the mileage and the fact that it being a rental vehicle, plus its been for sale for well over 100 days. These are all factors for negotiating that price down by 7K or more. I know what I am willing to pay and that is all that matters at this point.
so my question comes back to the work that was done. I can only base it what was on car fax and car fax states:
Transmission computer/module replaced
Transmission checked
Automatic transmission pan gasket replaced
Valve body replaced
Valve body overhauled/resealed
I am trying to understand what kind of issue this would be for a truck so relatively new.
I appreciate all of the insight.

There are still some 2014's on the lots...
I would find a local dealer and have him find you the right deal...
I agree that this was probably a rental truck that was hammered hard and put up wet...
No way would they unload the truck only one model year old with 17k on it unless they had no confidence in it..

do those repairs mentioned above point out to being abused? I am trying to understand what kind of repair work that is.
Here is the thing, the dealer probably bought that truck at a heavy discount so they have room to work with. Was it abused? maybe/maybe not. being a rental is one thing..but those that rent an f250 are different than say somebody renting a ford focus.
Maybe I am trying to justify a possible deal. somebody just tell me I am crazy and I should just walk away now!
