1998 Explorer transmission seal coming off

Hi..Have 1998 Explorer with 5R55E tranny and the automatic transmission extension housing seal keeps coming off, allowing a fluid leak. I just replaced it and it's doing it again. When I put it in there, it seemed tight, but...any ideas on how to keep this thing in there?

Most unusual complaint. If it seems to fit the extension housing tightly, I might ask whether you were able to de-oil the inner surface completely, or at all? Most seals have a coating on their outside diameter which adheres to the housing, if it's not wet with oil, and helps seal also.

So long as it's the correct seal, I would try what I suggest above. The oil must be stopped from leaking in order to clean the housing with solvent. This can be done by raising the rear of the truck fairly high to keep oil from draining out. Otherwise, drain the transmission partially, first. impish

Have you tried OEM or a different brand seal?

Did not de-oil, I just put it on. I will try cleaning and then re-installing. I heard Super Black RTV would help here too, but not sure..
