Iv melted down a 7.3 because it's got too hot...

And iv seen 246* in my 6.0 Excursion. That was flat ground in cool weather to boot!

But yea anything under 240 is fine unless your running it that hot a LOT

Yeah JP, but you are probably taking coolant temps. I am talking strictly oil temps. I have seen 240* when the coolant was only at 205*, but not for very long.

Nope, oil temp according to my OBDII and an app. My coolant was always steady at 186*. Needless to say it needed an oil cooler BAD.

Who in the world is tainting our conversation with six liter talk lol

So you melted a 7.3 due to hot oil temps ALONE, no other factors? Coolant and flow was fine, but EOTs got out of control?

Water pump went out and dumped the coolant. So I suppose you could say the oil was hot lol. But no, its wasn't hot oil alone

Speaking of working out.drove the big red dog to the other end of Indiana and back over the weekend. I delivered a doolie bed to another member for his project.it was adorable pulling the itty bitty utility trailer on the way back with the big red dog.
No issues to speak of with the truck and got 20mpg hand calculated.thats a win in my book!

Have you had a chance to swap out your T-stat yet and see if that helps the EOTs? I was thinking of you yesterday while dragging my big 'ol heavy box around. I had several goot WOT runs that got my EGTs up in the 1100 degree range and EOT was rock steady at 212-215 degrees. Made the 'ol work truck snort though!

The 180° stat helped immensely this summer . the old rag did much better pulling with oil and coolant when pushing hard. It may be cool for winter driving but we shall see. More improvements in the works...stay tuned...
