Pickin' and pullin'.....Today's haul!

Last weekend at the yard I scored D44 knuckles, spindles, discs, etc. to eventually do a disc brake swap on the '73. At that time I spied a '76 F150 with an FE, NP, and unknown t-case. My granny gear has been getting louder and the t-case has a really hard time, if not impossible, to shift into 4WD. After cooking in my brain this week I decided to take the day off to see if it was still there and get at least the t-case.

I was there at the opening, grabbed a cart, loaded it with my yard box. Joy! It was still there and in the same state it was last weekend. 'Disconnected the driveshafts, unbolted the mounts, removed the trans tunnel cover, and got to separating it from the trans. I did unbolt the shifter but when it dropped to the ground the shifter got hung up and snapped off the little "U" linkage. Oh well, I'll just re-weld it. I had thought all along it was a married NP203 (the shift **** was already pirated) but then I scraped the muck off the tag and it read "Model 205". Totally porno!

Well ya know who else did a NP205 swap is turbohunter to whom I want to thank for his experience and coaching because after a telephone call he recommended to grab the transmission and the intermediate housing. It took a coupla extra hours but I got 'er done. It kinda sucks working alone! $360 was the tally.

I'm pretty well spent so the parts will likely stay in the bed of my truck til I gather enough energy to unload the lunkers. I think I'm an inch shorter from lifting the parts into my 01 SuperCrew... it is confirmed that I am no spring chicken anymore but I am one happy camper with this parts haul.

Oh boy, that takes me back to when I stuffed mine in by myself.
Fun ain't it.
Congrats on the haul HIO.
Not to many of those left around these parts.
Hey BTW when you get around to doing it, there is a real cool tool that Harbor Freight has. It's such a great piece I can't believe it's from HF.
If you're working on the ground it's the only way to fly.
Transmission Jack - 450 Lb. Capacity
BTW again.
Remember that long output shaft will pull right out and spill bearings. It's just sitting in the case. Something to remember when you're tired.

yeah buddy! My fingers, legs, and neck are sore. It's a good thing there wasn't a camera around to record what i had to do to support the engine while I separated the transmission from the bell.. a steering shaft spanned across the radius arms with one side wedged up with a brake drum. I brought some rope (being prepared!) and found a driveshaft to span between the dash and the rear sliding glass and used the rope to cradle the trans while backing out the input shaft.... then I stacked a couple of tires and slid then rolled the trans on top before tilting it down to the ground. Gravel is funky feeling when it gets in yer waistband!

I was sure someone would have already picked these parts. My hopes weren't high but even better yet that it is a NP205. 'glad to save it from the scrapper and it'll go to good use... reduce, reuse, recycle. I even did a lil dance and pounded the hood in elation.

Again, thanks for the input on what to get. I'd rep ya a zillion times but I'm still spreading it around. I recall that trans jack from your thread and then seeing it at your house. It is definitely on the "to-get" list. Meanwhile.... there is the matter of getting the '70s exhaust done. The tubing came in a few days ago.. if I didn't go to the yard today that's what I would have been doing.

Ya know... to hell with work! I'll take another vacation day and make it a four-dayer since daylight is getting short and I ain't getting any younger.

Oy.. I stink and am offending myself..... I'm gonna take a shower.

Nothing better than a JY find. I always take a "come-a-long" to the JY, just roll the windows down and close the doors and use a piece of pipe to span the gap.

Of course I take a wheel barrow with me for the big stuff, or talk the yard dog to come back in there with the Bob Cat to pack it out to the truck.

Wow on those prices, I better hit my local JY and get a stock up on a few more of them in that case. I can get a 4 spd trans and xfer case for probably 50 bucks all day long.

I can't believe parts are so much $ and that hard to find out in Cali.

Again good score, and next time take a break and take some pics, cause we all love pics. Here is a JY run from the other day with a fellow FTE member, the TB cost 15 bucks, I think?

The other one might go on the other side?

Yeah we live in a different world out here Rich.
On one hand we don't have much rust to deal with but these JYs know that stuff is scarce out here.
When I drive through Wyoming and Montana my head is spinning from all the trucks on the side of the road.

PnP is a division of Schnitzer Steel (Ticker: SCHN), a metal recycler. They yards are really organized and the prices are posted. I like that because I don't have to haggle with the fat guy behind the counter who might be having a bad day (JM Dismantlers, Pittsburg, CA..they suck monkey nuts). The vehicles are processed - all liquids drained, fuel tanks punched, and vehicles put up on stands. And each vehicle out on the lot is bar-coded. While I was there, they picked up two rows (about 24 trucks) with a CAT loader for recycling and were filling up the rows with new pickins as I left. A yard tech will scan the bar codes and upload the data to the web's inventory. Very cool.

Because it is corporate, the yard techs won't lift a finger because of insurance and liability. I offered the check-out tech $20 if he helped me load it but "company rules" forbids it. I got my stuff loaded but can tell I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.

Pipe? There would be no pipe in their yard... it's just cars and trucks without miscellaneous stuff laying around. That's why I scoured the other rows to find the steering shaft and a driveshaft... gotta make do with what ya can find.

In terms of the toolboxes, I think that would be called "Miscellaneous Sheetmetal' and go for between $30 and $50 each. The rig I picked from today had one but I was beat and the battery-powered recip saw was in the truck. Another day perhaps.

10-4 on that. If ya find stuff here, gotta be quick on it or else another vulture will be along to get it. Hence, my vacay day just for pickin' in the cool breeze and sunshine.

The donor truck's date code was May 1976.. making it the last of the FE-powered Dents. The 205's tag is dated April 26, 1976 so it is a reasonable assumption that it was original to the truck.

Yep the last of the FE-powered Dents .. Divorced transfer case on the F250 and the beginning of disc brakes on the F250 4wd
