390 to 460 swap

Hey all!

I know there is probably a post somewhere on the site that has the answer to this question, but I am on my phone and it doesn't search well.

I have an 84 f250 with a 460. I found a guy who is selling a 390 with the trans and tcase. I want the trans for the 84. I know the 390 is part of the FE family, but are the bellhousings the same between the two?

I am not sure if the trans is a BW or a NP

any help will be awesome!!!!!

No, the 460 bellhousing should be a hydraulic clutch and the 390 bellhousing should be a mechanical clutch. Plus, a FE bellhousing won't bolt to a 460, but you should be able to bolt the 460 bellhousing to the FE trans. You need to make sure that your clutch disk from the 460 will spline to the FE trans and make sure the transfer case flange is the same. A lot of the 4x4 trucks from the '70's thru the early '90's used the NP 435, there is a good chance the two transmissions are the same.

I know my trans in the 84 is a t19 but it is a 2wd truck. So that's why I'm going for the 79 trans. I know the bellhousing on the t19 comes off but i didn't know if it would go onto the other trans.

Ford removable bell housings in this era all have the same 'butterfly' pattern.
