I go 6-7500 with my 08 V10. Always use motorcraft filters and oil from wally world.

 

How often do you have your oil analyzed during that 80,000 miles and how much do you have to send off to be analyzed? Filter changes?

 

I usually do an initial UOA around 20,000 then monitor everything since I do all my own work.
I usually change the full flow filter around 30,000 even though the UOA does not mention any correction, and the bypass around 50,000 I change, so I usually do my second sample right befor the bypass filter change.
Cost me $20 for each sample.

I inspect it every oil change and clean it every other oil change. Seems to stay reasonably clean.

 

Using your costs for the uoa and then an oil change at 80,000 miles you are looking at about $70 in costs by the 80,000 mile mark. $70 and oil that has 80,000 miles on it.

Since you know the oil is good to 80,000 miles why not just change your oil every 40,000 miles, spend the same amount of money and have fresher oil?

I'm not going to argue that oil won't last longer than 5,000 miles or tell you that you're crazy. My grandpa never changed the oil in any vehicle he ever owned and never had any problems. He put 400,000 miles on his old f8 wrecker and just added oil as it got low. I got his 69 ltd when he died and it still had a filter that my dad dated and put his name on it in 1970 just to see if he would change it. 38 years and 95,000 miles later I changed it. I just prefer to change mine at 5,000 because it doesn't cost much and I like to take care of my stuff.

 

A real good trick to see if your filter is doing its job is to wash your hands dry them then run your hand inside the tube behind the filter, if your hand is dirty you have a leak of a poor performing filter

 

My 97 F150 has bypass filtration and over 60k without an oil change... Kinda. I replace the bypass filter every 3k miles and add 0.75qt oil. Changing the filter and adding makeup oil takes 5 minutes.
I may add bypass filtration to the 2011 F250, or just continue 10k yearly oil changes.

This has been an interesting read. Looks like talking about oil changes is like talking about politics or religion. LOL. Anywho... I was one who changes his oil as it got dirty. Then talked with a friend who has a remote filtration system and his oil stayed cleaner longer. So I just ordered the oil test kit to see how my oil looks to how I do things now. So what oils and filters does everyone use and why. I'm currently an AMSOIL user.

 

I've changed mine every 7500 miles for several years now. On my F-150 and now on my F-250.

I use Motorcraft 5w-20 Full Synthetic oil and a Motorcraft FL820S Filter. I figure the guys who designed the engine probably know what is best to run in it.

When I was driving OTR and putting less than 7500 miles a year on my trucks I would change the oil every 4-6 months depending on when I was home and weather conditions.

On my Camaro which I only drive during the summer I change it once a year. My bikes are also done every fall before going into storage for the winter.

45k on it now and it has had oil changes at Ford's specified oil change intervals of 10,000 miles with motorcraft filters. I had the second batch of it analyzed by Blackstone. They said it was probably good for another 10k miles... Oh yeah, the oil was non synthetic 5w20 as per spec.. I won't be dumping the oil in that car any sooner than 10k intervals.
Now my truck or Plow Jeep are another story. They get changed with the season or after 5k miles and they both use synthetic.
Here's a good one for you.
I use clean containers for my drain oil and it gets put into my other equipment as though it were fresh oil.
Very little oil gets to the recycle center or my buddy's oil burning tank for his shop..

 

With today's oil and engines, 7500 miles is a perfectly reasonable oil change interval.

It's not 1972, it's 2014. Today's oils are much higher quality than they used to be, and engines are much cleaner than they used to be. The oil change chains have stuck with pushing the magical 3 month/3000 mile OCI for one reason and one reason only....because it sells more oil changes.

Quite honestly....in most vehicles, changing the oil at any less than 5000 miles is nothing but a waste of money and resources. There is some evidence that indicates changing your oil too often may actually do more harm than good.

Most new vehicles now have oil life monitors in them, which tell you when you should change the oil. Some are simply a mileage counter that will tell you to change the oil at X number of miles, but some are "intelligent" oil life monitors that actually calculate when the oil should be changed.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and a purolator pure one filter on my sd. On my others I use motorcraft oil and filters.

 

Oil life minder on my Focus went off for the first time at 10k. I did one oil change when it was new to get the lot oil out of it, then 5k and 10k, but I'm going to start going off the monitor at least. In my truck viscosity the is the main issue, but in the car I don't see why it can't go at least 7,500-10,000.

Are there better filter's than Motorcraft?

 

Depends what you mean by "better". You'll get just as many opinions on this as you will if you ask what oil is "best".

Personally, I think the Motorcraft filters are a great value for the money. They're a well constructed filter, and you can get them for around $4-5 at Walmart or your local auto parts store.

Wix makes great quality filters. Napa and Carquest are rebranded Wix filters.

Purolator has historically made great filters, but they seem to be having some serious quality control issues as of late. They seem to be having problems with the filter media tearing, and they are being less than responsive to people who have contacted them about it. This problem has been seen in many Purolator Classic and PureOne filters, and several Bosch filters. Even a couple Motorcraft filters have shown up with tears in them. (Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator, but to Ford's specs) Take a look through the threads here:

If you want one of the best filters out there at a good price, Look at the Fram Ultra. They're around $9-10.
