460 Coolant drain??

Hi,
I just got a 1989 F250 4x4 with the 7.5l

The coolant looks nasty so i wanna replace it all...is there a drain on the block?
I drained the radiator and got about two gallons, and i understand that it holds around four??
Thanks

I have never seen a drain on the block of any of my Ford trucks dating back to 1978.

Yea the 460 has block drains (351 has em too), one each side of the motor.

Right side its just behind the motor mount, left side too but IIRC it is just a little bit farther back then the one on the right side.

Look like square head pipe plugs.....well they are pipe plugs and they tend to be brass from the factory but not sure if that is always the case.

Refill it back with water and go for a 15 min ride, then drain again.

Repeat process till the water is clear. then refill with coolant

The radiator has a drain plug, taking the block plugs out might cause leaks later, they're probably rusted-shut also.

I just did the reverse flush using the method described in link below. Worked great. I, too, would be worried about block leaks after removing block drains.

I pull the block drain plugs every time I change the coolant. It's a simple tapered pipe plug - put a little pipe sealant on each one when you reinstall them. I'm not sure what the concern is with leaks.

It seems you'll always get some real crappy junk out of the block drains that you will never get out with simply draining the radiator… often you'll need to clean out the sludge with a sharp object before the coolant will drain.

Agreed!! I pulled the block drains on both my 300 and 302, and the crud was terrible. I had to drill mine first, the use an easy-out to remove it, they were rusted shut solid!!!!

The link doesn't work anymore. We salvaged the info and also added some useful photos:
